My Next Quest

August 11, 2020 By Carol Michel 10 Comments

Now that I've don't have bags of mulch nagging me from the patio, I feel a bit at loose ends, deciding what my next gardening adventure is going to be.I have many options—quests—that I can undertake. I could go buy those additional bags of mulch I need. It would be a good test of my intentions to not let those bags languish, age properly, before spreading the mulch.I could move around a few plants that I think are simply in the wrong place. But I think it is a bit early for that. After … [Read more...] about My Next Quest

When you don’t know where to start weeding

July 8, 2019 By Carol Michel 6 Comments

When you don't know where to start weeding because it seems there are weeds everywhere, where should you start? I have the answer! You should start with the bed or border where there are the fewest weeds. Surprised? Did you think you should head straight for "weed central" and start there?  Well, if you did, hear me out as to why you should start where there are fewer weeds first. First, if you start where there are fewer weeds and pull weeds in that area first, you help ensure that it … [Read more...] about When you don’t know where to start weeding

May 6, 2019 By Carol Michel 1 Comment

Pssst... over here. I've got something to help you improve your overall garden weeding experience. Interested? I'm not sharing this secret something with everyone. Just a few people. Like you readers who have wisely chosen to read this blog post. This secret something isn't the digging knife in the picture above, though that is a good tool to have and one that is useful for weeding. Nor is it my latest new weeding tool, the DeWit Ninja Cultivator, which I started using today and I think I … [Read more...] about Something to Improve Your Garden Weeding Experience

I was all “tough gardener” until…

October 2, 2017 By Carol Michel 10 Comments

I was all "tough gardener" this morning heading out to my garden to do some weeding and deadheading. I wasn't going to show any mercy as I began to pull out and cut back in Plopper's Field, my slightly overgrown, slightly not tended, perennial border where I plop in plants wherever there is a blank spot. It was easy to yank out the thistle and the beggars tick. No one likes them in the flower garden. I had no problem pulling out the hollow tubes left long after the daylilies last bloomed. … [Read more...] about I was all “tough gardener” until…

My Methods of Weed Control

July 31, 2016 By Carol Michel 8 Comments

The redbud in this picture is a weed. This has been a marvelous growing season for weeds, has it not? I feel like I can't turn my back on a flower border or vegetable garden bed for more than two seconds before a new weed seed germinates. There are weeds everywhere. I clear out weeds in the morning and by nightfall they are back, and it seems as though they've brought their friends with them. I look for weeds, find none, but the very next day, there is a weed in the spot where I looked … [Read more...] about My Methods of Weed Control
