I Practice Multiple Types of Weeding, Sometimes All At The Same Time

April 25, 2010 By Carol Michel 14 Comments

Is weeding in flower beds that are hopefully going to be dug up and expanded soon sort of like dusting the furniture in a house right before you plan to tear down walls for remodeling? No? Good, because I spent quite a bit of time yesterday weeding in my flower beds, beds I hope will soon be dug up and enlarged significantly with the new garden design. What else was I supposed to do while I waited for it to rain? Actually, I weeded because there were weeds and I’m a gardener. It was … [Read more...] about I Practice Multiple Types of Weeding, Sometimes All At The Same Time

Weeding Therapy: Good For The Garden And The Gardener

June 17, 2009 By Carol Michel 27 Comments

An unexpected rainstorm this evening left another half inch of rain on the garden and kept me from going outside after work for an extended session of weeding therapy.Have you heard of or tried weeding therapy? If not, you should really try it. It’s good for both the garden and the gardener in so many ways! For the garden, weeding therapy is all about getting rid of the plant thugs that are stealing nutrients, water and space from the non-weed plants. For the gardener, weeding therapy is all … [Read more...] about Weeding Therapy: Good For The Garden And The Gardener

There’s A Daylily In There Somewhere

April 28, 2009 By Carol Michel 19 Comments

This daylily, Hemerocallis sp., was nearly overtaken by a large dandelion, Taraxacum officinale, thus requiring extraordinary procedures to eradicate the dandelion. In other words, I had to perform a dandelionectomy, which is sometimes referred to as a taraxacumectomy by some high-brow haughtyculturists. Some plants can withstand this procedure, while others can not. Fortunately many daylilies, including this ‘Stella d’Oro’ that I swore I was getting rid of but haven’t, can easily withstand a … [Read more...] about There’s A Daylily In There Somewhere

Benefits of Not Weeding

October 19, 2008 By Carol Michel 16 Comments

One of the benefits of not weeding is seeing volunteer petunia seedlings blooming amongst the dried up corn stalks on a beautiful October day. These petunias are almost exactly the color of the original Wave™ Petunias, giving me a clue as to where they might have come from.I spotted them yesterday afternoon, as I stood on the edge of the vegetable garden thinking about how someone needs to get busy with cleaning it up.At the risk of shattering any image that anyone might have about me having neat … [Read more...] about Benefits of Not Weeding

Bare-handed Thistle Pulling Explained

July 25, 2008 By Carol Michel 21 Comments

Come admire the sunflowers (Helianthus annuus 'Monet's Palette') and I'll explain how to pull thistle weeds with your bare hands. On a previous post about the lessons we can learn from our weeds, I noted that I've taught myself how to pull thistle weeds bare-handed, and there were several readers who asked in the comments how I did that.So I'm going to try to explain it.The first thing you should know is that the old age is true, "know thine enemy". Study it, find out its strengths and weaknesses … [Read more...] about Bare-handed Thistle Pulling Explained

Embrace Weeding For A Happier Life

April 27, 2008 By Carol Michel 29 Comments

One of the secrets to being happy as a gardener is to embrace weeding. No matter what kind of garden you have, as soon as you cultivate the earth and plant what you want to grow, the weeds will begin their quest to take over your garden.Embrace weeding. You will never finish weeding. The weeds are always out there sprouting and growing in the areas you think you have finished weeding. You might slow the weeds down a bit or even halt them temporarily, but eventually they come back. They always … [Read more...] about Embrace Weeding For A Happier Life
