It's all too easy to forget about the indoor plants with so much going on outside in the summertime, especially if you don't take your indoor plants outside for the season. In my sunroom, once the night bloomer blooms, I don't do much with the plants except open the blinds for them each morning and water them once a week or so.So when I was watering the indoor plants on Sunday, I was surprised and delighted to find an orchid in bloom. This one has never bloomed for me before and I think I … [Read more...] about Inside, Mysterious Blooms

Stenosarcos Vanguard - Hybrid variegated leaf orchid, (Sarcoglottis speciosus x Stenorrhynchos speciosum). This is one of the plants I noted was blooming at my house for the 1st monthly garden bloggers’ bloom day.Though the days are getting longer, winter still seems to have a firm grip in our area. I purchased it in early January 2003 in bloom and then it took two years before it bloomed again. But now I think it will probably bloom every year around this … [Read more...] about You Smell it Before You See It
Orchids in Bloom and Bud
I continue in my quest to convince everyone that orchids are “easy” houseplants and really require no more maintenance than any other houseplant. In fact, I think they actually prefer less fussing around! Here is an orchid blooming now in my sunroom. I bought this several years ago and it is now blooming annually at about this time. I don’t know the variety but believe this is a Dendrobium sp. orchid. (Comment if you believe otherwise). And look at this orchid in bud. This is a Zygopetalum sp. … [Read more...] about Orchids in Bloom and Bud
Moth Orchid
Early in July when the Queen of the Night was drawing full attention in the sunroom, this moth orchid also started to bloom. In fact, if you look at the blog posting of the big night when the Queen of the Night bloomed, you can see in the bottom right corner of the picture of the whole plant, this little moth orchid starting to bloom. And guess what? The moth orchid is still blooming, long after the memory and scent of the night bloomer have faded. That means it has been blooming for over a … [Read more...] about Moth Orchid
