I did a bit of traveling last week for work and found myself in a Cracker Barrel where much of the decor included old gardening tools. Hoes, shovels, rakes, grass trimmers, even an old wheelbarrow, were hanging on the walls and suspended from the ceiling. I took some pictures with my iPhone, most of which didn't turn out because of the lighting, but you can just imagine how surreal exciting it was to find myself in such a place. My traveling companion acted as though she didn't know me, … [Read more...] about Hoes, everywhere

My New Hoe: The Rake n’ Hoe
Rake 'n Hoe from Kaizen Garden "You jest about what you suppose to be a triviality, in asking whether the hen came first from an egg or the egg from a hen, but the point should be regarded as one of importance, one worthy of discussion, and careful discussion at that." (Macrobius, Roman Philosopher) Which brings us to the question that my new hoe, the Rake 'n Hoe from Kaizen Garden poses for the gardener. Did the hoe come first and then they added the rake, or did the rake come first … [Read more...] about My New Hoe: The Rake n’ Hoe
Testing a Hypothesis
Over the past two days, I’ve observed something several times which has led me to develop a hypothesis. Then I went looking on the Internet for how to test my hypothesis and ran into all kinds of explanations and formulas and statistics, which lead me to come up with another hypothesis that “statistics can make your head hurt”. I have no interest in testing out my hypothesis on statistics because of the probable pain involved. My other hypothesis has no pain involved. It’s all about happiness … [Read more...] about Testing a Hypothesis
My Newest Hoe is a Spork
I got a new hoe several weeks ago from the Garden Tool Co. How I came to get this new hoe is a testament to the connections you can make with others of like mind on Twitter and Facebook. The folks at the Garden Tool Co. found out about my hoe collection via a tweet I sent out on Twitter, checked it out, didn't see a hoe like the spork hoe and offered to send me one. I accepted their offer because I like hoes. I like to use them in the garden. I have a collection of hoes. I generally can … [Read more...] about My Newest Hoe is a Spork
Loudon’s Rules of Horticulture, Rule No. 7
And I quote from Garden-Making: Suggestions for the Utilization of Home Grounds by Liberty Hyde Bailey (1898), “Persons who follow the entertaining writings of Mr. A. B. Tarryer (a pseudonym for a well-known experimenter) in “American Garden,” a few years back, will recall the great variety of implements which he advised for the purpose of extirpating his hereditary foes, the weeds.” That's all it took to send me down yet another rabbit hole in search of the real identity for this A. B. … [Read more...] about Loudon’s Rules of Horticulture, Rule No. 7
Reputations
Should I be concerned that not just one person, but two people left this comic strip from yesterday's newspaper on my desk at work? Now why would they leave this particular comic on my desk? "Why", she asks Dr. Hortfreud, while slowly tapping her fingers on her desk. Tap, tap, tap... why? Is it because I once wrote a post about different types of gardening related fears, which did sound a bit like Lucy Van Pelt when she listed all of Charlie Brown's possible fears in the classic TV special, … [Read more...] about Reputations
