Handmade Gifts For Gardeners, Idea No. 1

November 2, 2007 By Carol Michel 7 Comments

When I posted the gardening geek's guide to gift giving I wrapped it up with a promise to post about hand made gifts for gardeners... tomorrow.Tomorrow is now today (plus a few days), so here's the first idea for a hand made gift.Several years ago, a friend gave me this handmade garden journal. She bought a composition book, added a ribbon around the middle with enough of the "ends" hanging off it to tie it off. Then she embellished the journal with with some paper leaves and flowers with button … [Read more...] about Handmade Gifts For Gardeners, Idea No. 1

Digging and Burying

October 2, 2007 By Carol Michel 15 Comments

Kim at A Study in Contrast posted a few days ago about what she found buried in her garden while digging post holes. I've also posted in the past about what an adventure it can be to dig a really big hole and find something you didn't expect. What treasures are down there just waiting to be dug up?Here in my garden, I haven't found too much buried around the place... some interesting rocks, one fossil, one oddly shaped rock that looks sorta, kinda like a bird. At least, I think it looks like a … [Read more...] about Digging and Burying

You Might Be A Gardening Geek If…

September 2, 2007 By Carol Michel 33 Comments

You might be a gardening geek if...1. You get to the grocery store and realize you're wearing a pair of garden clogs instead of regular shoes. Bonus points if you own more than one pair of clogs for gardening.2. You have at least ten empty clay pots in your garage or shed right now. Bonus points if you always have potting soil on hand, "just in case".3. You go to baseball games primarily to admire the grass in the outfield. Bonus points if the only version of Monopoly you own is Garden-opoly.4. … [Read more...] about You Might Be A Gardening Geek If…

What Makes a Gardener – The Answers!

January 25, 2007 By Carol Michel 5 Comments

Why does it seem to take some courage, a little “gumption”, to stand up amongst the crowd and say “I’m a gardener”? Even if you feel as though you were born to garden and be a gardener, admitting it to others seems difficult. Why?I think it is because once someone says “I am a gardener”, others, especially those who don’t regularly garden, suddenly have expectations that everything the gardener plants grows. And we know it doesn’t. Expectations that the self-proclaimed gardener’s gardens will be … [Read more...] about What Makes a Gardener – The Answers!

Can You Be A Gardener and Not Sow Seeds?

January 16, 2007 By Carol Michel 11 Comments

It started as a few questions on seeds and seed sowing, a few thoughts put out as a blog post as I prepared to end the holiday celebrations and return to work. It evolved into several longer than normal comments and many more posts from fellow seed-sowing, garden-blogging gardeners from all around. It showed that many gardeners enjoy sowing seeds! Yeah! It is not a dying aspect of gardening, in a society that wants, and expects, instant results. Many of us are willing to sow seeds and wait, to … [Read more...] about Can You Be A Gardener and Not Sow Seeds?

What Makes a Gardener?

January 9, 2007 By Carol Michel 18 Comments

What is it that makes someone a gardener?I was talking to someone who was planning to retire in a few years. She proudly announced, “My husband is buying me a greenhouse for my retirement!” My response, “I didn’t know you liked to garden.” Her answer, “Oh, I don’t really garden, but my husband thinks I might like to when I retire.”I had a sinking feeling her greenhouse would be an empty greenhouse. How many people buy all the tools or toys for a new hobby or activity that they’ve never tried … [Read more...] about What Makes a Gardener?
