Bulb hoarding

September 12, 2011 By Carol Michel 13 Comments

As soon as I read the headline, a thousand thoughts went through my mind. Did I buy enough bulbs this spring for fall planting? People are hoarding bulbs. Why are they hoarding flower bulbs? Do they know something I don't know? Is there a shortage of bulbs this fall? Maybe I should go buy some more now? People are hoarding bulbs. Should I send emails to make sure the bulbs I pre-ordered in the spring are really going to be shipped to me this fall? Oh, dear. I need to let other gardeners … [Read more...] about Bulb hoarding

Dr Hortfreud Encourages Us to Accept Mistakes

April 29, 2011 By Carol Michel 3 Comments

Good evening, Carol. Hi Dr. Hortfreud. Are you ready for our session, Carol? Yes, I am. Okay, tell me what you are feeling when you look at this half circle of peonies? Well, Dr. Hortfreud, I feel "happy" All of the peonies are coming up nicely and have flower buds on them. Last fall when I dug them up and moved them here, the ground was so dry that I watered this spot for days to get it ready. Pretty soon, the ants will show up on the buds. In fact, I hope that the ants that think my … [Read more...] about Dr Hortfreud Encourages Us to Accept Mistakes

Three Wishes for Thursday

March 10, 2011 By Carol Michel 18 Comments

Iris reticulata 'Lady Beatrix Stanley' I have three wishes for this Thursday. I wish that it would stop raining long enough for the raised beds in the vegetable garden to dry out so that I can rip out all the wood that is framing those beds, pull up the landscape fabric in the paths, till up the whole thing, lay out new raised beds, edge them with some kind of stone, and have it all done so I can still plants peas on March 17th. I wish... well, really, I only have the one wish right now. … [Read more...] about Three Wishes for Thursday

An Early Spring Visit With Dr. Hortfreud

March 2, 2011 By Carol Michel 8 Comments

Hello, Carol. Hello Dr. Hortfreud. It's been awhile. Tell me what you are thinking about now, Carol. Oh, I'm thinking about a new quote for spring. "Nature is slow but sure; she works no faster than need be." (Henry David Thoreau) That's interesting, Carol. Now, why did you choose that particular quote? Well, Dr. Hortfreud, it seemed a lot better than "My goodness things are happening so quickly this spring and with everything I need to do I'm not sure where exactly to start. Nature is so … [Read more...] about An Early Spring Visit With Dr. Hortfreud
