May Dreams Gardens

Teasers: Five Questions Unanswered

April 13, 2010 By Carol Michel 6 Comments

Is it my imagination, or are all the flowers of April bursting into a grand crescendo of bloom just in time for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day on the 15th?

Will this be the year where even I give in to the continuing days of “June” weather in April and plant my warm season vegetable crops early?

What will I do with all of those plants I need to move to make way for the new garden design?

Will I rescue the ‘Stella D’Oro’ daylilies, now valiantly growing in the compost bins? When a plant tries that hard…

Finally…

Will Hortense Hoelove return this spring to answer questions for the plant-lorn amongst us?

There’s a lot going on here at May Dreams Gardens. Stay tuned to find out the answers to these questions and more.

I think this week's GBBD will be spectacular, Carol; everything in my garden is way ahead of schedule. As for the Stellas, I have trouble, too, getting rid of such a stalwart bloomer. Last year I divided most of mine, but I didn't want to add any more, so I gave away all the extra divisions I could. Even then, I had trouble finding homes for all of them. Poor things, it's not their fault they're not part of the in crowd anymore:)

Let the Stellas go my friend. They have no place in your beautiful new design. I know I'm being bossy, but the color isn't even a good yellow. Get 'Hyperion' if you want a beautiful yellow daylily. I saw an entire garden of them planted amongst other daylilies last year. Such a clear yellow, and a spider too.~~Dee

I agree about the Stellas, they are a lot of work and not really a rebloomer in zone 5. I gave hundreds away and finally left them at my other home.

Hyperion is lovely but tall, Mary Todd is a Triploid and a real stunner and Happy Returns is smaller but a very nice yellow.

So much to ponder! I'm hoping things dry off so I can get a few photos for Thursday…

Carol, the temptation is very great to start planting annuals, but hold fast for another week or so. We don't want to tempt the gods of the gardens too much. 🙂

I had to laugh at this one as I dug some Stellas last fall and just left them lying near a wall. They seem to be growing despite the lack of soil. I really don't like the color of Stellas. Bloom Day holds great promise.
