Grape Jam and Yes, Another Tiny Tomato

August 26, 2007 By Carol Michel 13 Comments

*See Monday evening breaking news below on tiny tomatoes*Look, I made a mess in the kitchen grape jam. Everything is all cleaned up now, I think, and I have nine jars of jam cooling on the counter. I'm sure some people are wondering what the big fuss is, anyone can make jam. But my family members reading this, who know I'm not much for cooking, are probably wondering what happened to me, what possessed me to make jam after all these years. Grapes, that's what happened, that's what possessed … [Read more...] about Grape Jam and Yes, Another Tiny Tomato

Tiniest Tomato Do Overs

August 26, 2007 By Carol Michel 10 Comments

There has been a challenge issued as to whether or not the tomato I used for the tiniest tomato ritual yesteday is indeed the smallest tomato in the blogosphere.Chuck in San Francisco believes his tomato is smaller. I believe it might be close, but my new tomato is quite small, too.Yes, I get "do overs", in case you are wondering, as I'm not going to easily give up bragging rights for who has the smallest tomato. I'd never hear the end of it.Plus I posted about the first tiny tomato, soI get to … [Read more...] about Tiniest Tomato Do Overs

Ritual of The Tiniest Tomato

August 25, 2007 By Carol Michel 12 Comments

Is there going to be a prize this year for the tiniest tomato that is still a full-grown ripe, ready to eat tomato? If there is, I declare myself to be the grand champion, blue ribbon winner.Would you like to know the secret to growing such a tiny tomato? You just pick a cherry tomato variety that sounds like it is going to be really small and grow it in a year that hasn't been very good for growing tomatoes.Way back in January, when I had big aspirations of growing the tiniest tomato, I picked … [Read more...] about Ritual of The Tiniest Tomato

Neighborly Chatter Over the Garden Fence

August 4, 2007 By Carol Michel 11 Comments

Neighbors don't talk over the fence much anymore, do they?If you lived next door to me, here's what we would chat about this evening."Did you read that the water company around here wastes one billion gallons of treated water a year through leaky pipes and who knows what else?" I sure did read that article. In the meantime, they've asked us to go back to the odd-even system of watering because it is mighty hot and terribly dry around here and they just can't keep up with the demand for water. My … [Read more...] about Neighborly Chatter Over the Garden Fence

August Days at May Dreams Gardens

August 2, 2007 By Carol Michel 12 Comments

If you don't like your weather forecast, you can have mine. We should hit 90 degrees or higher every day for the next five days. And there is no rain in sight, not even a pop up thunderstorm. Just sunny and hot. The only thing that will be higher than the temperatures these next few days is the water bill. But enough about the weather. The weather is monotonous and boring and will be the same every day for awhile.Welcome, August! Hot, hot, hot, hot August.I've got some passalong hostas that truly … [Read more...] about August Days at May Dreams Gardens

First Daylilies

May 20, 2007 By Carol Michel 20 Comments

The first daylily bloom appeared this morning. It is no doubt a 'Stella D'Oro', which should bloom all summer long to the point that I'll likely not notice them along the edge of my patio after awhile. They will be a background to the rest of the garden. These were some I had dug and divided this spring and I'm glad that has not kept them from blooming.I'd be more proud of this first bloom if I had not stopped at my sister-who-does-not-garden's condo yesterday to put a few small trellises in a … [Read more...] about First Daylilies
