Stay Calm, Do Not Panic, But…

January 9, 2010 By Carol Michel 13 Comments

I did not read yesterday's paper until after alert May Dreams Garden reader Robbie of Going Green Mama left a comment on my seed catalog personality test post  about a potential vegetable seed shortage that she read about in our local paper.  Everyone stay calm. I googled it and got some more information.  Susan Reimer, who writes for the Baltimore Sun, wrote about a possible vegetable seed shortage, too, in her column on December 31st.  You can read … [Read more...] about Stay Calm, Do Not Panic, But…

WhajagetforChristmas?

December 26, 2009 By Carol Michel 21 Comments

When I was a kid, part of the fun of Christmas was calling up friends on the day after asking “WhajagetforChristmas?” all in one excited breath, and then interrupting one another exclaiming over what we got for Christmas. WhajagetforChristmas? I got some antique seed packets! Aren’t they beautiful! And on the back of each is some wonderful garden advice! Like on the Dwarf German Kale, it says, “…on a moist day after the plants are three or four inches high, transplant to two or three … [Read more...] about WhajagetforChristmas?

There Will Still Be Time To Buy Seeds After All The Holiday Festivities

December 22, 2009 By Carol Michel 14 Comments

I saw the first seed display of the season a week and a half ago at a big hardware store, the one that starts with "L". It was sandwiched in between some sorry looking poinsettias and those cardboard boxes full of Christmas wrapping paper. My first instinct was to buy some seeds, of course, but then I remembered that we hadn't even celebrated Christmas yet. So I started a little chant in my head. "There will still be time to buy seeds after all the holiday festivities."  Three more … [Read more...] about There Will Still Be Time To Buy Seeds After All The Holiday Festivities

No Seed Catalogs Means Hoe Movie Time!

November 18, 2009 By Carol Michel 18 Comments

Through Twitter, email and other social media sites, I have been made acutely aware that many gardeners have already started to get seed catalogs in the mail.I, on the other hand, have not yet received any seed catalogs and am starting to feel as though I have been inexplicably dropped from the seed companies' mailing lists. I wonder, ever so briefly, how this could be because I order as many seeds, if not more, than most gardeners. I order so many packets of seeds that I use an Excel … [Read more...] about No Seed Catalogs Means Hoe Movie Time!

Petunia In The Patio

September 1, 2009 By Carol Michel 15 Comments

When you last sowed seeds did you make sure the seed starting mix had been sterilized? How about the container you put it in? Did you make sure it was clean, too? And lighting? Did you pay attention to whether the seeds needed light or dark to germinate and adjust the light accordingly? Soil temperature? Did you get a warming mat to make sure that the soil wasn’t too cold? Of course you paid attention to watering, too? Not too much and not too little? And did you make sure the seeds were … [Read more...] about Petunia In The Patio
