Saving Seeds: A Seed Management System

January 5, 2008 By Carol Michel 21 Comments

Gardeners face decisions every year about what to do with the seeds they don't use. These seeds fall into two categories... seeds leftover because we didn't need all the seeds in the packet, and seeds that are still in unopened packets. In the past I tossed my leftover seeds and seed packets into a drawer, and then when that drawer got too full to close all the way, I put them in a nice big plastic storage bin. When I look at this full bin, which holds the equivalent of 18 quarts, I think "how did … [Read more...] about Saving Seeds: A Seed Management System

Understanding Seed Catalogs

January 4, 2008 By Carol Michel 11 Comments

Is there no end to this endless stream of seed catalogs being delivered to my mailbox here at May Dreams Gardens? Am I on everyone’s mailing list? This evening I found another seed catalog in a pile of unsorted mail. It’s slick and glossy, so it’s going right to the recycle bin.And you might be thinking, is there no end to these posts on seed catalogs? What else could Carol possibly write about seed catalogs?Well, there is an end to these seed catalog posts, and it will be mercifully soon, but … [Read more...] about Understanding Seed Catalogs

How to Read Seed Catalogs Without Going Mad

January 3, 2008 By Carol Michel 22 Comments

Hey! Set aside all those seed catalogs for just a minute. I'm going to share my personal method for reading and buying from seed catalogs, a method that will save you both time and money. Some newer gardeners may be getting confused by all the seed catalogs they have at this point or like my sister, they have no seed catalogs and would like to get some to order from. But I know if my sister got as many seed catalogs in the mail as I get, she'd go mad trying to figure out what to buy.I know my … [Read more...] about How to Read Seed Catalogs Without Going Mad

Now We Can Talk About Seed Catalogs

January 1, 2008 By Carol Michel 23 Comments

When you get a new seed catalog in the mail, do you rush inside, drop your keys and packages by the door, forget everything else you had planned to do, and immediately read the seed catalog? Or, do you set the seed catalog aside with all the other seed catalogs, and then wait until the holiday festivities are over, the decorations have been put away, and the house is more or less back to normal, before you sit down with your favorite hot beverage and read through the seed catalogs all at … [Read more...] about Now We Can Talk About Seed Catalogs

Handmade Gifts for Gardeners, Idea No. 2

November 3, 2007 By Carol Michel 7 Comments

What seed obsessed gardener wouldn't like to get a gift of seeds in a handmade seed packet?Or better yet, what gardener wouldn't like to get a handmade seed packet with some 'seed money' inside or maybe a gift card good at their favorite nursery or garden supply website?I've made these seed packets before and given them as gifts for even non-gardeners. The first few times, I filled the packets with actual seeds thinking, "who wouldn't be thrilled with seeds?"Then I figured out that many people … [Read more...] about Handmade Gifts for Gardeners, Idea No. 2

Finally, Violas

June 25, 2007 By Carol Michel 18 Comments

It's time to confess what seedlings we all still have that weren't quite timed properly or never made it to a "grown up pot". I know from posts in January that there are a lot of gardeners, including me, who do a lot with seeds.I can not be the only one who still has seedlings that haven't been planted in a container or flower bed at the end of June.First up, I have the violas. Usually, every other year or so, I get the big idea that I'm going to grow pansies and violas from seed, and sow them … [Read more...] about Finally, Violas
