Happy New Year, Fifteen

December 31, 2014 By Carol Michel 7 Comments

Time flies The ol' rabbit Fourteen's bags were packed and he was checking his watch as he peered through the open garden gate looking for signs of Fifteen. As he waited, he looked back over the garden and reflected on his year.  He was not particularly proud of the winter he had brought with him. It was surely one for the record books that wouldn't be forgotten for quite some time.  Cold, snowy, icy.  Brrrr... But he thought he had more than made up for it with a lovely … [Read more...] about Happy New Year, Fifteen

I forked my beans to keep the rabbits away

May 27, 2014 By Carol Michel 18 Comments

I forked my beans to keep the rabbits away from them.  Some may look at this fortress of forks and think it looks ridiculous, but it really does help protect the tender bean shoots from being mowed down by a bunch of marauding, toothy, ravenous rabbits. I also forked my pepper plants, but not before the rabbits bit off three of them.    Overall, I am pleased with how the garden is growing so far this season.  Except for the rabbits eating the three pepper plants, or … [Read more...] about I forked my beans to keep the rabbits away

Happy New Year, Fourteen

December 31, 2013 By Carol Michel 5 Comments

The ol' rabbit, Thirteen, gazed cross the garden, taking one last look before his time was over. "I sure am leaving the garden quite green", he said out loud, in case there was any one there who could hear him.  "I remember when I arrived and took over for Twelve, this place was snow covered from a blizzard that ol' Twelve threw down before he left for good. "I kind of like this green, though it is a might bit cold out here." Thirteen began to reflect back, taking pride in how many … [Read more...] about Happy New Year, Fourteen

Happy New Year, Thirteen

December 31, 2012 By Carol Michel 8 Comments

View across Ploppers Field on a snowy day The ol' Rabbit, Twelve, stood in the snow looking across Ploppers Field toward the green chairs where he had seen Eleven waiting for him so long ago. "My how a year can fly by," he said to no one in particular.  "I'm gobsmacked that it is time to go already, but I'm ready, none the less." With that he looked at the notes he had carefully made out for Thirteen.  He wanted to be sure that Thirteen didn't mess up the weather the way he had. "I … [Read more...] about Happy New Year, Thirteen

‘Twas a month before winter

November 26, 2012 By Carol Michel 6 Comments

'Twas a month before winter... well, actually it is 26 days until true winter which begins on December 21st.  The only blooms left are in the sun room.  I'm currently enjoying these orange, orange, orange Thanksgiving cactus blooms.  I have separated them from some hot pink Thanksgiving cactus blooms because even someone as color-challenged as I sometimes am can see that these clash. Out in the garden proper, over the last month I moved everything out of winter's way, either … [Read more...] about ‘Twas a month before winter

Happy New Year, Twelve

December 31, 2011 By Carol Michel 10 Comments

The old rabbit, Eleven, sat in the green chairs left out in the garden for the winter and watched the gate on the far side of the garden for signs of his replacement, a young, energetic bunny named Twelve. As he sat and waited, he began to reflect on the past year. He had some things to be proud of. He had made sure that the new beds and borders that Ten had left him were well-planted. He also thought the gate to the vegetable garden was a nice addition, one that would always belong to him. … [Read more...] about Happy New Year, Twelve
