The safest place for a plant during a drought is in a container in a slightly sheltered location that keeps it out of the hot sun. Ideally the location should also be near an outdoor faucet which has a hose hooked up to it so that the gardener can water the plant the minute it looks like it might need a little drink. In my garden, there are three plants in containers that occupy such a location. I check them daily but I try not to fuss over them. I know you can kill a plant with … [Read more...] about The safest place for a plant during a drought

I Am Both Excited and Scared
Stapelia bud I am both excited and scared. Back in 2008, when I visited Austin, Texas for the first garden bloggers’ get together, Annie in Austin gave me a start of her Stapelia, which she had gotten from her Aunt Phyl. I’m excited to announce that after two years of growing in my sunroom, my blogalong passalong Stapelia from Annie now has six flower buds on it. This Stapelia, which Annie thinks might be Stapelia gigantea, is sometimes called starfish flower because the blooms are … [Read more...] about I Am Both Excited and Scared

That’s a lot of plants to choose from to take to the island, so I think I’ll limit my choices by choosing only plants I … [Read more...] about Set Sail With Me On The Good Ship May Dreams

Waltz in the Garden
Every gardener soon learns how to do the Waltz in the Garden. It begins innocently enough with a trip to the garden center, perhaps just to get a few bags of top soil or a hose end sprayer. We tell ourselves we won’t look at the plants, there’s no time really. Then we arrive at the garden center, perhaps at the same time as a new shipment of plants or maybe just at the time when all the watering has been done and so the plants look fresh, and eager, and oh so pretty. As we scurry through the garden … [Read more...] about Waltz in the Garden
