The Origin of Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day

February 10, 2011 By Carol Michel 26 Comments

“We can have flowers nearly every month of the year.” – Elizabeth Lawrence

Four years ago, on February 10, 2007, I posted that little quote from Elizabeth Lawrence,  prattled on about what blooms through the year in my garden and invited anyone who wanted to join me to post about what was blooming in their gardens on the 15th of the month.

I decided to call this designated day “Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day“.

Five days later, on February 15, 2007, I had absolutely nothing blooming outside under a blanket of snow, but I posted anyway and 36 other bloggers joined me by either commenting or posting about what was blooming in their gardens on that day.

Fast forward to today.  I now have four years of history on my blog about what is blooming on the 15th of every month in my garden and  I’ve met  many other garden bloggers who have joined in at various times, sharing what is blooming in their gardens.

In the beginning, I tried to look at every blog that had a bloom day post and leave a comment, but once we got to a hundred or so a month, I couldn’t do that anymore. But I still try to look at new blogs and have found some great blogs through this meme. And I’ve discovered several new plants that I’ve added to my garden after seeing their blooms featured on someone’s bloom day post.

In five days, on February 15th, I’ll once again be posting on my blog about what’s blooming in my garden as I begin a fifth year of bloom day posts. Like most of my February bloom day posts, it won’t be a long list, but with a warm up in the weather forecast for this weekend, there might be a surprise bloom out there. I hold out hope, having once had a crocus bloom in my front flower bed on January 28th!

Thank you to all those who have participated, whether from the beginning or starting with last month. You’ve all enriched my gardening life, expanded my knowledge of plants and hardiness zones, and made me realize that, yes, in some places you really can have flowers nearly every month of the year.

GBBD is such a great tradition in the our not-so-little circle. You were inspired to initiate such a wonderful gift of sharing among garden bloggers. And I love finding new blogs through your meme, too! Happy Blogiversary

This is the reason I began blogging, to join in the fun of sharing, and searching in winter, for blooms every mid-month. Thanks Carol!

can't wait to see what is blooming…it would take a week or 2 of warming to get rid of the snow here to see anything…just had 1.5 ft over the weekend and now another storm is coming…

I'm rather new to your blooming party, but I've so much enjoyed seeing and reading of what's blooming all across this beautiful earth through your meme. It's a beautiful reminder that even though some of us may be buried in snow, somewhere, something is colorful and alive… and that's a wonderful thought! Thank you, Carol. Hoping you find that surprise bloom!

Bloom Day ensures that I will see blooms even if they are not in my own garden. Thanks for this one Carol. It is the gift which continues to grow larger each Bloom Day.

oh man I really really hope there will be a bloom by then, but I doubt it. I wish so badly to see some green! I have a few things growing inside, but it just isn't the same, is it?

I remember that first Bloom Day post. It is a fun way to keep a record. I now keep the date in my tickler file so it doesn't sneak up on me.

I have learned a lot from the posts gardeners post on the 15th of each month. I am always too late to do so, but I intend to try harder this year.

Thanks so much for starting the monthly bouquet from all over the world!

No bloom day post for me yet. My plants very rarely flower. I do have some new babies though from a recent horticulture exhibit so hopefully I will join soon.

I've heard about Bloom day on the 15th of each month-thank you so much for starting it. While we are buried in snow here in the northeast it is such a wonderful feeling to know that there is something blooming somewhere. I can't wait to see what beautiful blooms nature has to offer!

Living in a cold climate I do not have a single bloom in the garden, but look forward to GBBD each month. I appreciate you doing this meme because I have enjoyed it quite a bit.

So this is where it came from! I learned of it just by reading blogs and noticing the trend. I just started my own blog this month and so today was my first GBBD post! So very exciting, even if there wasn't too much to share. Thank you so much for getting this awesome bloom-ball rolling!
