Greetings on a lovely Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day in June!
If you don’t love a garden in June, will you ever love it?
Here in my USDA Hardiness Zone 6a garden in central Indiana, I’m pleased to have enjoyed a beautiful spring, so far. We’ve gotten just enough rain, and until a few days ago, the temperatures have been mostly mild. I realize it hasn’t been that way for many others.
I count my blessings and my flowers!
That includes the two lavenders pictured above. I wish I knew the varieties because they’ve been outstanding in a corner of my vegetable garden, asking for and receiving little care from me. I purchased them years ago as tiny little plants from Carolee’s Herb Farm at a local garden event. Carolee no longer sells plants but at one time had dozens of varieties of lavender so she knew which grew best in this area of the world.
Now let us ask the question we ask each month. Which flower owns the garden this month?
Is it roses?
It could be roses, if I had more than two or three of them in my garden.
Or is it clematis?
Clematis is making a strong showing in June.
Or maybe we should choose the lowly, much-loved dutch clover?
Perhaps it should be oakleaf hydranges?
Or maybe June belongs to the ditch lilies, Hemerocallis fulva, that grow along country lanes in early summer, and in a bed on the east side of my house.
Other contenders include hardy geraniums, like ‘Rozanne‘, though truthfully, most of the other varieties of hardy geranium I have are nearing the end of their big flush of bloom.
For purely sentimental reasons, I could also make a case for sweet peas owning June, but the only ones currently blooming are ‘Little Sweetheart’ which I grew in a container from seed from Botanical Interests. The sweet peas in the vegetable garden are just starting to think about blooming.
I would love for violas to own June, but I already gave them March, April, and May. And September and beyond.
That’s probably enough of them for now. Or is it? You can read more about my violas in the post I wrote about my new violatum.
I think June belongs to all these flowers and more, including these little pansies with sweet alyssum which have been blooming in this container since late March.
I hope they continue to hang on for the rest of the summer. I’ll do all I can to help them!

Carol – I had lots of different flowers last month, but in June Roses take over. This year I realize I have to learn how to prune roses properly, but however languid they are arranging themselves, I love them all.
I’m not quite sure which flower owns June here Carol, as May was so cold and wet. It means I can show off my flower following the Fibonacci sequence for Blooms Day this month instead. It usually blooms between May and June’s Blooms Days!
It would have to be the coreopsis that is owning June for me. Perennial Uptick and several kinds of lance-leaf, as well as annual tall plains. The purple coneflower will probably overtake it for July though. I’m glad to see you include clover, it has such pretty flowers. And ditch lilies! They are amazing. They aren’t something that grows feral here in OR.
In my garden, Kniphofias are the dominating plant of June. I grew some seedlings on and planted them throughout the garden, now they’re blooming everywhere!

I’ll have a bit of a pity party and say I’m not sure which flower owns June in my garden because I’ve broken my ankle and thus not been in my garden much. Ya, it is a royal bummer. At least I was able to cobble together a post to continue my Bloomday streak.

April and May generally outperform June here, especially this year as, with the onset of higher temperatures, the effects of our miserably low rainfall are more noticeable. That said, I’ve still got an obnoxious number of plants in bloom. June is usually the peak for Agapanthus and Achillea ‘Moonshine’ but this year I’ve proclaimed Callistemon ‘Cane’s Hybrid’ the headliner. For the record, both my sweet peas and my violas are already history here. Thanks for hosting, Carol!

I published my first Bloom Day post about my Astoria garden flowers this month. It’s taken so much time and energy to garden it and we’ve owned it for five years! I think Penstemons rule this garden, though there’s really a bit of everything since it was planted with many passalongs and trades. And it has to coexist with deer – and that’s a continuing lesson!

I have both the white clover and a red clover I seeded in too.
I have not yanked out all my pansies yet, but I really need to get my summer containers done, so they may all get kicked out soon.
Like you though, I’ll also keep my alyssum and some of the violas as long as I can.

Hi Carol, It’s a very special bloom day for me. My mother’s 100th birthday. My mind is filled with garden memories that I shared with my mother.
Beautiful Blooms ,loved all spring blooms . We are into summer seeing violas and pansies in your post makes me feel pleasant in these summer days.

Normally, I would say that the Siberian irises own June in my garden, but this year they have been upstaged by the Allium, the peonies, and the roses. Thanks again for hosting this garden party, Carol.
Dutch clover is the winner…makes for a pollinator lawn…a new way of looking at the lawn!
Yes, I think roses are the proper choice to dominate the month of June. But at my house maybe it’s the ever fragrant milkweed flowers? They need to make it into perfume.
Lovely blooms Carol! For June, I would have to go with Knock Out Roses. They start blooming early June and just keep on giving all the way through fall. Peony ‘Bartzella’ and Saliva ‘May Night’ take center stage at the end of May and into June as well. It’s a tough choice, but roses win! Happy Bloom day and thanks for hosting!
