Strawberry blooms The bloom is on the strawberry and off the Korean Spice Viburnum. By golly, now that it isn't blooming, I think I can remove that Korean Spice Viburnum on the right side of the gate to the vegetable garden after all. It has a big dead branch in the middle and is right where I want to plant a new honeyberry. Then I'll move the other smaller Korean Spice Vibnurnum on the other side of the gate to someplace else in the garden. And when I say "I", I really mean the … [Read more...] about The bloom is off the viburnum

And then it bloomed
My plan was to cut down the large Korean Spice Viburnum (Viburnum carlesii) on the right side of the gate. Then I would move the much smaller Korean Spice Viburnum on the left side of the gate to another location in the garden. After all, the larger viburnum has a big dead branch in it, and it's getting on in years. Plus, I have two honeyberries, Lonicera caerulea, growing in one gallon pots on the front porch that I want to plant where these two viburnum are currently … [Read more...] about And then it bloomed
Guest Post: Garden Fairies Assess Garden
This shrub is not aware of the drought. Garden fairies here. We are garden fairies and we are posting very quickly while Carol is trying to do some clean up in the drought-den. A drought-den is like a garden, only without rain. We just made up that word, drought-den. We are garden fairies, we can do that. We have no idea what excuse Carol has for making up words. But that is a topic for another day. Yesterday and earlier today when Carol was out assessing her garden and trying very hard not … [Read more...] about Guest Post: Garden Fairies Assess Garden
Pearlbush
Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride' I'd rather have a garden full of flowers than a jewelry box full of jewels. Give me gold, and I'm likely to sell it to buy more plants. The first blooms of Pearlbush, Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride', opened earlier this week. New to my garden, this small shrub, endured a long, hot summer trapped in a black plastic pot on my patio two years ago. I planted it in the garden that fall, then unceremoniously dug it up and moved it to … [Read more...] about Pearlbush

Revealing birds, fairies, and letters
Some gardeners are afraid to plant large shrubs that grow wide and tall. I'm not. This Snowball Viburnum is a mass of branches and has many suckers around its base. But I leave it in its natural form because it provides cover for the birds in all seasons. In winter, the lack of leaves reveals just how many birds enjoy the cover of this shrub. When I'm not standing nearby trying to take a picture, they are all over it, prancing from one limb to another, darting from it to the nearby feeders … [Read more...] about Revealing birds, fairies, and letters
