A postcard, from me to you. 1911 style. "Dear Frida, Got your card and glad to hear from you and also so glad to hear from Mother. We know we can't have her many more years -- how I wish I lived where I could see her often. Write me Frida often as you can. As ever Belle with love." "But once" I shall pass through this world but once. Any good there- fore that I can do-or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. In Green Old Gardens – A Poem
I found a poem today down in a rabbit hole of old gardening books where one author and book leads to another, and another, and then there is a snippet of a poem, and then I find the entire poem. I love these kinds of rabbit holes. I especially like the last verse of this poem, In Green Old Gardens. I also like that I found this poem the day before the author Violet Fane's Birthday on Feb. 24. Happy 170th Birthday, Violet, whose real name was Mary, Baroness Currie, née Mary … [Read more...] about In Green Old Gardens – A Poem
Garden Bloggers Muse Day: Spring Psalm
SPRING PSALMDrawn upward by some hidden power,Life is cracking the crust of earthAnd bursting forth from limb and stem.Your aroma, O Life-giver,Is upon the springtime wind,And I feel its power stirring deep within me.Green is your color, O God,The green of new lifeThat lovingly transfigures earth’s dreariness,Long held prisonerBy the icy web of winter’s cold.Green up my heart with hope,In your perpetual promise of life.Send forth from my soulNew shoots, fresh budsEager to grow in your divine … [Read more...] about Garden Bloggers Muse Day: Spring Psalm

My Garden is Perfect Right Now… At Least in My WInter Weary Mind
I know that someday soon I will be able to remove this shackle of winter, also known as my winter coat, and go outside to work in the garden instead of shovel the snow. Until then, my garden has become “almost” perfect under the last of the snow and in my mind. Want to hear about it?Weeds? They’ll be tamed this year, no doubt. After all, with 14 hoes, I’m sure I can find at least one that will take those weeds out. Even better, maybe those hoes will do the work on their own.Undug flower beds? … [Read more...] about My Garden is Perfect Right Now… At Least in My WInter Weary Mind
When the Frost is on the Punkin
When I work around the yard in the fall, often times I think over and over of the 1st line of the poem “When the Frost is on the Punkin” written by the Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley.“When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!”“When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!”“When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!”Translation “when there is frost on the pumpkin and all the corn is gathered and tied together out in the fields”.It’s … [Read more...] about When the Frost is on the Punkin
