Garden Fairies Provide Updates

August 8, 2021 By Carol Leave a Comment

Garden fairies here. We are garden fairies and we have come here to provide important, meaningful, relevant updates, and a bit of news. First, we are sounding the alarm that the surprise lilies are blooming, though with those big pink blooms, they don't actually need sound to set a gardener's heart a-flutter. No, not a-flutter because they are so pretty! A-flutter because they bloom at what we garden fairies like to call the beginning of the end of summer. Now, no one should be running … [Read more...] about Garden Fairies Provide Updates

Dr. Hortfreud Discusses Obsessions

August 5, 2021 By Carol Leave a Comment

A visit with Dr. Hortfreud, my therapist for all things gardening. Hello, Carol. I'm pleased to see you... what's on your mind today? Hello, Dr. Hortfreud. Not much on my mind today. Just thought I'd stop by for a friendly visit. Oh, well, in that case, do you mind if I refer to my notes and ask you a few questions? Um, okay. Carol, I see that you've recently become obsessed—more obsessed—than usual with violas and all members of the Viola genus. Define obsessed, Dr. … [Read more...] about Dr. Hortfreud Discusses Obsessions

Two Kinds of Gardener

July 24, 2021 By Carol 8 Comments

There are two kinds of gardener. There is the kind of gardener who looks at all the Nicotiana that self-seeded around her garden and thinks how nice it is to have all the lovely flowers come up and she didn't have to do anything except let them grow. Then there is the other kind of gardener who looks at all those flowers that self-sowed all over the place and decides she should pull them all out because she thinks it looks like a bit of a mess. (Don't be that kind of gardener.) There … [Read more...] about Two Kinds of Gardener

Garden Fairies Lament the Lack of…

July 3, 2021 By Carol 1 Comment

Garden fairies here! We are garden fairies and we barely have time to write this blog post, but we feel it is our duty and responsibility to make clear what we lament. What we lament is the lack of notice that there would be tree trimming going on in our garden. Now, we are not talking about the tree trimming that Carol does, which is rare, infrequent, and to us, inconsequential, except sometimes when she makes a boo-boo and saws off a limb she regrets cutting off. It is at those times … [Read more...] about Garden Fairies Lament the Lack of…

The New Plant Family Legolaceae

June 18, 2021 By Carol 3 Comments

I've recently become acquainted with a new plant family, Legolaceae. There appear to be at least six species in this plant family, all from the genus Lego. The poster above shows these six new plants in flower. They resemble Roses, Asters, Daisies, Poppies, Snapdragons, and Lavenders. Like the Lego® Bonsai I found earlier this year, most of these plants are easy to grow, needing no water, sunlight, or soil. As cut flowers, they make a lovely flower bouquet. However, they have … [Read more...] about The New Plant Family Legolaceae

A collection of plants in the genus Viola is called…

June 4, 2021 By Carol 2 Comments

I read recently that a collection of pine trees and other evergreens is called a pinetum. A new term to me. I already knew that an arboretum is a collection of trees and a herbarium is a collection of dried plant material. I did some online searching to find out if there were any other -tums or -ums for different types of plant collections and couldn't find any. Then I remembered rosariums which are gardens of roses. And terrariums, which are gardens in glass containers, not to be confused … [Read more...] about A collection of plants in the genus Viola is called…
