Good morning, class! Good morning, Professor Hortledore. Well, class, don't you all look spiffy and shiny and ready to learn. Today in gardening class we are going to discuss "what elements are included in a good garden". We'll start our discussion by breaking down the following paragraph from The Spirit of the Garden by Martha Brookes Hutcheson. Please turn to page 5 and read the last paragraph silently to yourselves, while I gaze out the window and count the … [Read more...] about Professor Hortledore teaches her first gardening class

Underneath all that snow
Underneath all that snow, there lies a garden. I call it Plopper's Field because I just plop plants here and there in it, wherever there seems to be a bit of open dirt. I do try to remember not to put tall plants in front of short plants, and mind where there might be some bulbs planted. All in all, it turns out fairly nice, if I do say so myself. In early spring, its a pleasant sort of green. Later on in late May, there is more in bloom. In September, it still has some … [Read more...] about Underneath all that snow
A pleasaunce

The Gardens of Elizabeth Lawrence
Have you ever been in a garden for the first time and felt like you had been there before? After reading many of Elizabeth Lawrence's books and gardening columns and devouring all the information that the Wing Haven Foundation has posted online about her life and garden, it all seemed so familiar to me as I entered the gate to her garden on Saturday, June 30. My photographs, taking during the late morning, close to noon actually, are admittedly not of the best quality, but please … [Read more...] about The Gardens of Elizabeth Lawrence
