Orange Orb

September 20, 2006 By Carol Michel 3 Comments

A pumpkin peeking through the leaves. I love the color of this pumpkin. Now that's orange! These pumpkins are also in my youngest sister's back yard. It's a 'giant' variety, but not the Atlantic Giant variety that produces those monstrous recording breaking pumpkins. Those pumpkins need acreage to allow the vines to grow and support over 1,000 pounds of pumpkin. And generally, I think those who are serious about going for a record, allow just one pumpkin to grow on a vine. The current record is … [Read more...] about Orange Orb

The Start of the Big Show

September 19, 2006 By Carol Michel 4 Comments

It's time for the next big show of the garden. The last hurrah, a final and hopefully, long curtain call before the very, very end.Yesterday, our high temperature was 83. Today, our high was around 70, which was the temperature at 6:00 AM and then it went down from there as a cold front moved through and brought more rain. If we are to believe the 10 day forecast, we will not see temperatures above 70 until mid-next week. Time for a jacket! But, let's not get ahead of ourselves, there are still … [Read more...] about The Start of the Big Show

Welcome to Autumn and to A Change of Seasons

September 3, 2006 By Carol Michel 6 Comments

You will not catch me lamenting the changing of the seasons! I have always lived in a four season climate… traditional Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Not wet/dry. Not cold/hot. Four distinct seasons. Yes, the seasons do sometimes fade into one another and sometimes you wake up to find that yesterday was one season and today is altogether a different season. I may complain about the passing of time that the changing seasons remind us of, but I won’t complain about the seasonal changes. We … [Read more...] about Welcome to Autumn and to A Change of Seasons

Settling In

November 23, 2004 By Carol Michel 1 Comment

I've nearly completed the clean up in the garden. I've mowed the lawn at a lower setting (twice) hoping that soon it will stop growing. I think I'll need to mow one more time before winter starts. I also need to cut back perennials, but that's a task that if I don't get it done, it won't be the end of the garden. … [Read more...] about Settling In

Fall

September 29, 2004 By Carol Michel Leave a Comment

It was definitely colder this morning, but by lunch time the day was picture perfect with clear blue skies and a perfect temperature. Sometime in the afternoon, while I was working in the basement of the office, heavy clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped. I don't think it will rain, however.I need to get out to the vegetable garden and start harvesting the last of the vegetables before we get a frost or freeze. The final harvest will include peppers and tomatoes for sure. Once we get … [Read more...] about Fall
