Rhetorical Questions

May 27, 2017 By Carol Michel 12 Comments

I went to the local greenhouse to get some more containers of Geranium ‘Rozanne’, which I have somehow fallen in love with this spring.

I knew when I went to the greenhouse I was going to buy the plants, and I knew I was going to buy those plants from them because I already bought some from them earlier but needed more, and they were kind and gracious enough to add some to their latest re-stocking order from the wholesale place up the road a bit.

Without thinking, I asked, “How much are they?”

Really, that was a rhetorical question which needed no answer because when you see a plant you love and decide you are going to buy it, at that point does cost really matter?

Well, it matters a little bit, but mostly it doesn’t matter that much.

You love the plant.
You are getting the plant.
Money will not stop you from getting the plant.
You will own that plant.
You love the plant.

Another rhetorical question that comes to mind when you see a plant you love at the garden center is, “Where will I plant it?”

Really, if you love the plant, there is room for it in your garden. Every gardener knows this.

You may have to move some other plants, enlarge a flower border or maybe dig up a whole new flower border, which means you’ll have to buy some companion plants for the new love of your gardening life. And we all know a need for more plants is a good need to have.

You love the plant.
You are getting the plant.
There will be a place for it in your garden.
You will own that plant.
You love the plant.

After all, as every gardener knows, when you fall in love with a plant, no physical constraint like money or space can keep you from buying it.

As Louis of Parallel 49 Palms and Exotics once shared:

"To buy or not to buy, that is the question:
Whether it is nobler of the mind to preservere
through the temptations of plant lust,
or to succumb to your urges
    And by succumbing own it?"

To buy or not to buy that is the question…

Here in the Algarve, prices vary so much from one garden centre to the next if I have my heart set on a plant I tend to shop around.

That said, I am still kicking myself for not buying a baby Kumquat tree for €6.95 it was a case of
    'do I want it?' YES
    Do I need it? No
Come on think of an excuse to buy it, Pip
Have I got somewhere to plant it? No

I am still hankering over the little tree and waiting for something to die…

I love Geranium 'Rozanne' 🙂 My grandmother used to love it and it was all around her front and back yard, and in a pot in the kitchen too.I planted it in my garden few years ago and now it's everywhere. And you're right about the rethorical questions – I always have money and place for new plants 🙂
