Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit!
As we say on the first day of the month.
And no, it didn’t snow last night, but I thought this was a good picture to start the month with. Product placement for those looking for something different for a Christmas present?
Who isn’t looking for something different for the season these days? Gifts, plants, decorations, plants, food, plants, books, plants, books, seeds, books…
I do like this quote from a book I just bought.
“Well here comes Christmas! That astonishing thing that no ‘commercialism’ can define – unless we let it” – J. R. R. Tolkien.
The book is Letters From Father Christmas by J. R. R. Tolkien, edited by Baillie Tolkien. It contains copies of the letters Tolkien wrote to his children each Christmas as Father Christmas with other characters showing up through the years, including a polar bear, elves, etc. I am enjoying it because it includes images of the actual letters plus the drawings he included to illustrate some of the stories he told in the letters. It’s charming and warm and perfect for the season.
Which reminds me there are some movies I will watch again this month, including It’s a Wonderful Life. People commented when I originally posted the above picture that it looked like it was right out of a scene from that movie. Well, kinda, I guess? It’s actually a picture I took in my hometown of Greenwood, Indiana several years ago. Then with a little photo editing, I managed to string up that banner advertising my children’s Christmas book, available wherever books are sold.
Another movie I’ll be watching is The Bishop’s Wife. I watched it for the first time last year and loved it. I lamented that I hadn’t watched it years earlier. Watch and listen closely at the beginning so you don’t miss some wonderful botanical banter! (By the way, if you keep track of movies in which gardening is heavily featured, I started a list of gardening-related movies back in 2008 but haven’t really added to it since then. If you know of a movie to add, let me know.
Anyway, I will use Tolkien’s quote to frame the month.
“Well here comes Christmas! That astonishing thing that no ‘commercialism’ can define – unless we let it” – J. R. R. Tolkien
Happy December! Thanks for reading to the end, again!
