Hello Fall of ’12!

September 22, 2012 By Carol Michel 8 Comments

Hello Fall of ’12!

Good bye and good riddance Summer of  ’12.

Wherever you came from, please don’t come back.   You were a season of stealth.  Day by day, hour by hour you robbed my garden of all that is good about summer with your record high temperatures and your stinginess with rain.

But you are in the past, Summer of  ’12,  and Fall of ’12 already seems one hundred times better, though it is only been here for a few hours officially. The temperatures are cooler and the rain has returned. The flowers are bright and vibrant in shades of pink, purple, and yellow.

Yoo hoo, we can all go out again. Summer is gone. Fall is here and there’s lots of gardening we can still do and lots of gardens we can still enjoy.

Although Autumn is my favourite time in the garden, I do not wish to bad-mouth the summer of 2012. I was able to grow things like never before due to the longest season ever (starting in March!). I never worked as hard at digging, planting, weeding and watering. The rewards were MANY and I have new plants that I am eager to follow up on if nature allows them to survive our difficult winters. This year the combinations of roses and clematis excelled. And now is the time for ornamental grasses, tamaracks changing to gold, asters of all colours and bright goldenrods. The biting insects are gone, the temperatures are perfect. I love it all.

It hasn't quite left here in Arizona. Hopefully, just a few more days. I can't wait to be able to be outside in the early a.m. and late afternoon. I was able to plant a few things when we had a break but now it has returned. Having to shade everything in the afternoon cuz it is brutal. But, it is gonna get better.

I simply couldn't wait for fall. This summer was brutal. Check out my ups and downs on gardening in the hot summer sun of Florida…. sandigrows.blogspot.com

After a long, hot, dry summer, in the Algarve, autumn arrived today with a torrential downpour this morning!
