What seed obsessed gardener wouldn’t like to get a gift of seeds in a handmade seed packet?
Or better yet, what gardener wouldn’t like to get a handmade seed packet with some ‘seed money’ inside or maybe a gift card good at their favorite nursery or garden supply website?
I’ve made these seed packets before and given them as gifts for even non-gardeners. The first few times, I filled the packets with actual seeds thinking, “who wouldn’t be thrilled with seeds?”
Then I figured out that many people really like the seed money better, so that’s usually what I put in them now.
I found this seed packet template several years ago on the Internet, but can no longer find the original source. (If you know where I might have gotten this, let me know so I can provide a link.)
It’s basically a Microsoft PowerPoint slide, so you do need to have PowerPoint to make these seed packets. You can add clip art or photographs, customize for any holiday or special occasion, and put whatever title on it that you want.
You can also add information and clip art on the back of the packet.
Once you have added your own words and pictures, you print the template on 8.5 x 11 paper, cut it out, round the corners of the flaps, fold the flaps down, glue it together and then fill it with seeds, seed money or a gift card.
Or, if the gardener has been bad, you could always fill it with some dirt.
But that wouldn’t be a very nice gift, now would it?

AS the receipient of several of these seed packets, I can tell you the picture doesn’t do justice as to the cuteness of this gift. I believe the first time the seed packets were given was with an Easter theme. “The Gardening Aunt” put them in the neices and nephew’s Easter baskets. They had raffia wrapped around the little packets with ceramic charms hanging from them. Well, the packets were too cute to open and use the seeds, so I confiscated them from the kids and for years they sat unopened in a little basket on the hutch as decoration. I think I did eventually open them and use the seeds, but they do make an adorable decoration as well.

This year I’ve decided to make christmas cards with handmade paper with the seeds embedded in the card paper so all they have to do is plant the whole dang card and watch it grow. I’ve pressed lots of flowers from my garden to decorate them with and even printed out instructions. 🙂

The possibilities with this idea are endless. I love it. It would be a great Mother’s Day gift too. I really like the spring/Easter idea. A lot of churches have mother/daughter banquets and this would be a lovely little gift for each place setting.
