Is blue really that difficult to photograph with digital cameras? ‘Back in the day’, when people used film in their cameras, whenever someone showed slides or pictures of a blue flower they would always preface it by saying that the camera didn’t do justice to the blue of the flower.
I’m not sure that’s true any more. I took a picture of this pansy earlier today and I think it turned out pretty good. When I compare the picture on my screen to the real thing, it is pretty close. Not exact, but close. The real flower has just a wee bit more of a purplish caste to it.
The other day I took another picture of something blue… my blue jeans after an hour or so of being on my knees digging out sod. Everyone knows what color blue jeans are. What do you think, how did I do photographing my jeans? Did I capture the blue?
Now don’t be shocked by the mud on my knees. I know I’m not the only one who gets this dirty in the garden. Am I?
No, you’re not the only one, Carol! I have a stack of clothes that I keep just for gardening, as I’m sure you do, too. And this is the major reason. I have gardening socks, too. You know the ones – they’re white, but not quite, because even in closed shoes, they manage to get dirt in them and the socks are goners. I now will walk around outside in just those socks, because they’re beyond hope of ever being presentable in public anymore.

yea I think you captured the blue. I too got my knees dirty with getting the riding mower going. And doing some floor laying in a bedroom.
My pants certainly get that way and if I know I’m going to be back at it the next day, I just leave the pants on the floor and put them back on the next morning. Now, if I can stand them up in a corner, I know it’s past time to wash them!
The blue looks right to me, too, Carol. The digital cameras really do take photos that look close to what I think I see. There is no such thing as too many blue pansies, is there!
A few years ago I bought a pair of strap-on kneepads like tilers use, and they work well as long as I’m kneeling. When I stand up and walk around getting more supplies or tools, the elastic/Velcro part is so shot that the kneepads slide down to my ankles, looking like turtle-shaped spats. I hope to heavens Yolanda Elizabet never sees this sight – she’d be scandalized.

That’s a really blue viola. Almost like a Meconopsis betonicifolia Himalayan poppy blue. Actually your jeans are more like the blue of the poppy. Sort of cerulean.
Good question. I’ll have to check by snapping chicory – I’ve heard that it’s the bane of photographers.

Now you know why I wear wellies when my garden is muddy. Perhaps you should invest in a pair of hip high boots those fishermen wear? Or a pair of those trousers and boots in one thingy? I wonder if they have them in pink or babyblue or something? 😉
Very pretty blue pansy, I just bought a couple of soft lilac ones in a matching pot. They have such smiling faces, don’t you think? And they’re tough as old stylish garden wellies too. 🙂
I think the blue is getting better. The Olympus I used to use seemed to have a harder time of it…but, I guess by today’s standards, it’s old (maybe 3 or 4 years!)…anyway, I’ve also found that watching the light helps capture blue/purple better as well.
I don’t just get my pants dirty, my shirt will be covered, too! In fact, pretty much all of me is covered! My neighbors once gave me a gardening apron…I think they saw me all dirty and thought I needed it…lol! I, too, have a stack of clothes just for gardening, so it doesn’t matter how dirty and stained they get.

All… I’m certainly happy to confirm what I knew, that we all get dirty in the garden; no way not to do so, even if we wore ‘wellies” or hip boots, or whatever!

My problem is that sometimes I get in the garden wearing cloth that is not exactly good for gardening and by the time I notice is too late. But I don’t do the laundry in my house
I love your pictures and the garden theme. And I’m one who seems to get everything I wear covered in dirt and bark… I forget what I’m wearing usually… Oops! Dirty knees again! We started seeds indoors this weekend here in Missouri and will do a total garden makeover this year. It’s coming too fast!
Nothing feels better than getting dirty in the garden. O.K., well there might some things that feel better.

I think blue was the most challenging color for film manufacturers. Digital does just fine, it seems. I think my hepatica picture looks just like the ones in the garden. Now, getting the sky to show blue in my pictures is something else again!
