Garden Shoe Challenge!

March 9, 2007 By Carol Michel 19 Comments

Yolanda Elizabet and I apparently have quite different opinions when it comes to footwear for gardening and my fashion sense about my gardening shoes! And if I may quote from her blog on her thoughts about my gardening shoes:

“Poor deluded thing! :-)”

Hmmm, sounds like a challenge to me! Who has the better collection of shoes for real gardening? Me or Yolanda Elizabet? Or maybe it is YOU, reading this blog right now.

You can check out her footwear collection here. I think some of her shoes may have taken a gentle walk through her garden, but have they done any real gardening? Would some of those shoes even last a day in a vegetable garden?

And here is my collection pf gardening shoes which you can read about here:

I assure you that my shoes may not be pink and flowery or slick and plaid, but they’ve all spent considerable time working in the garden!

Who does have the right shoes for gardening? And if you were given one set of shoes – hers or mine – which would you prefer for real gardening?

But this challenge isn’t just between me and Yolanda Elizabet. I challenge everyone, women and men, to show us your gardening shoes!

I feel very deprived. I don’t own a single pair of gardening shoes. Maybe that’s why I don’t know how to garden

Although I don’t have a picture, my current garden shoes are my oldest pair of Clark’s leather clogs. Pefectly comfortable and I don’t have to worry about keeping them clean and pretty looking.

Them there shoes of Yolanda’s look mighty fancy. Goodness how do they stay so clean? I’m thinking your shoes are a bit more realistic and practicle. I’d be afraid I’d get hers dirty.

I do have a pair of New Balance shoes for gardening…the “last” pair as compared to the “current” pair. But mostly I garden in Dansko clogs(winter) or sandals(summer) which are my everyday shoes…my feet need the support and I have yet to try on a pair of actual garden clogs that provide any support. In any case, I rarely remember to change into garden shoes…hence the scrub brush at the garage sink.

I don’t have a designated pair of shoes because I am not disciplined enough!
Whatever I have on at the moment are my garden shoes. I wreck more pairs of shoes that way….

I have two pairs of shoes I garden in. One is a pair of black garden clogs that I’ve had for years. I’m ashamed to say that I quite often wear them running errands as well, because they’re super comfy. Besides those, I have an old pair of hiking boots that are too worn for actual hiking, but are great for gardening in.

Yolanda’s shoes are pretty, but I don’t think I’ve owned a pair of pink shoes in my entire life. I’m just not a pink shoe kind of girl, I guess 🙂 Your shoes definitely look more like mine, and just as well-loved (or well-used, whichever you prefer.)

I have no gardening shoes… isn’t that terrible? 😉 Unless you count whatever pair of shoes I end up ruining by walking behind the mower.

The only way to garden is BAREFOOT!

I’ve decided that it might be dangerous to post photos of my XL New Balance walkers, green clogs and Nike sport sandals… remember what happened to Peggy Hill!

I feel kind of stupid not having any “real” gardening shoes. Usually it’s my old New Balances with my orthotics in them. I’ve tried wearing the rubbery clogs but our yards are so uneven that my feet “turn” in them and I fall. And lots of time in the summer I just go barefoot. But that can be sort of painful on the woodchip mulch we have. Those pink booties, and rather designer looking shoes that you linked to look just a little too “precious” for my tastes. And wouldn’t your feet sweat in them?! Alyssa

Carol, I’d take your shoes any ole day over Yoanda’s. If I’m gardening, I don’t care what I look like – I want practical!

    Carol,
I have added my shoe picture to my blog. I am happy to say that they look more like your shoes, than like Yolanda’s!

I love your clogs, Carol, especially the green ones in the middle. I’d love a pair of those.

If you were going to buy a golf club, you wouldn’t walk into a store and buy the first one you see, would you? Of course not; especially if you want to improve your golf game! You’ll want to hold the club, take some practice swings, hit some balls if the store has a practice spot, and look at the price, of course. If you are considering buying running shoes, you need to go through a similar process and take the time to find the perfect shoe.

I added my shoe photos to my blog. They are old and some of them are worn out.
