Garden fairies here!
We are garden fairies and we decided we would write a blog post on this blog because though Carol mentioned she might write one in her weekly newsletter last week, she didn’t, so here we are.
We decided to steal Carol’s topic, which was autumn crocuses, because we have something we’d like to say about them.
They exhaust us!
We are garden fairies and we work diligently, expeditiously, and without complaint every late winter/early spring on the “regular” crocuses which bloom all over the back lawn and in the flower beds in the front garden. Carol has planted thousands of them, and we have made them multiply with self-sowing.
That means in the spring we have a lot of work to do to push them up out of the ground and open them. Then if it rains or snows or is too cloudy for bees, we have to close them up to protect their pollen.
As Seedy and Soddy can attest, this is exhausting work! It is all garden fairies on deck for it around here.
So what does Carol do to reward us for this hard work, other than stand around in the back lawn in the early spring and take all the credit for the crocus lawn? She plants fall blooming crocuses! That’s what she does.
So in the fall, when we should be slowing down and just working on changing the color of the leaves, via our own not-to-revealed-secret methods, we have to once again push up crocuses, make them flower, etc.
Whew, it’s enough to make a garden fairy pack up and… wait. Skip that thought! We are garden fairies. We would never pack up and move because where would go and enjoy fall-blooming crocuses? Two kinds! Crocus speciosus and Crocus sativus. Please forget what we said about the extra work in the fall.
We are garden fairies. We can handle a few more crocuses each fall because they are just about the prettiest things we’ve ever seen in late October. Prettier than mums! Prettier than… well, that’s what makes them so special. When every other flower around here is on the downhill slide towards Winter, these crocuses pop up through the fallen leaves with a cheery “Here we are! What did we miss?” kind of attitude.
We are garden fairies. We love the fall-blooming crocuses and you should love them too!

P. S. It has come to our attention that we garden fairies are rarely mentioned in Carol’s weekly newsletter over on Substack. We think this is a travesty and so we are forming a committee to insist, implore, and otherwise persuade Carol to at least give us one mention a week. We are garden fairies. We believe this is a reasonable, practical, and fair request. Thank you.
