Welcome to Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day for October 2012.
Here in my USDA Hardiness Zone 6b garden in central Indiana, fall is slowly pulling the curtain across the garden, ending this most unusual growing season.
This fall has been as good a season as I can remember in quite some time. It brought rain, which revived many plants that had sulked and suffered through the record setting drought.
The roses made a nice comeback, including this OSO EASY™ Cherry Pie, Rosa ‘Meiboulka’, which has been a star since it was planted just last season.
The yellow roses out front, Sunny Knock Out® Rose,
Rosa ‘Radyod’, had a tough summer, planted in full sun with a south facing wall throwing radiated heat back at it all summer.
They look pretty good now, with cooler weather. Early next spring, I’m going to cut them back hard and rejuvenate them a bit.
Elsewhere in the garden, asters are finishing their bloom in Plopper’s Field.
The bees have been all over them, in search of pollen that they probably couldn’t find in July when the garden was so dry, almost nothing was in bloom.
Asters, grasses and other prairie-type flowers are finishing up their grand stand in August Dreams Garden.
I do like the backdrop that the grasses provide for the flowers. And to think, I had to be talked into planting grasses when this garden was designed.
Out in the vegetable garden, I’ve cleared off most of the crops and some cover crops are growing in the raised beds. Surprisingly I’m still picking a few raspberries and this crazy Clematis is blooming.
Not even frost has stopped it, and we’ve had several frosty mornings. Go, Clematis, go.
Finally, an October bloom day post just doesn’t seem complete without the quintessential flower of fall, tall sedum.
In a few weeks, these blooms will fade to a lovely, rich brown, the leaves on the trees will turn and drop and the curtain really will be closed for this growing season.

So happy to hear you got rain – we're still waiting, so my sedums had a very short bloom time. Yours looks great – as do the roses.

Wow… I thought that I was doing pretty well with the flower show, but you have a LOT going on–in spite of frost, to boot! (We've been lucky so far–no frost here.) The clematis and roses are particularly lovely. Happy GBBD!

It has been an unusual year here as well on Long Island with seasons changing several weeks in advance and Fall well underway with vibrant colors this year. You have lots of lovely Fall color in your gardens and your roses are just beautiful! Happy GBBD and thank you for hosting Carol!

Hi Carol, your garden is looking terribly nice. It is good i am not living in your part of the world, as I will be depressed when these beautiful blooms will succumb to the change in seasons. At least in our hot tropics, they are not drastically changed by the seasons.

Your roses are lovely. It's spring here in New Zealand so I'm still counting down to the roses- they won't be far off though! In the meantime I've got lots of bold bright bloomers like ranunculus and azaleas.

I have that Sedum too, Carol. The bees and butterflies love it and I love the way is goes brown and adds winter interest in the garden 🙂
I have grasses with my asters as well. They really are a good combination aren't they

We are a bit further ahead of you with leaves faling and flowers fading…no frost but a freeze which zapped a lot of the garden. Your fall garden is gorgeous.
Thanks again for another Bloom Day. I agree with you about grasses. I think they tend to make other things look better more than they do standing alone.

I'm a huge fan of grasses, asters and sedums at this time of year, hopefully our grasses will bulk up in the next year or two.
My perennial geraniums and scabiosa are still blooming. I have one crazy thing happening. I planted a "Heaveny Blue" morning glory. It grew like crazy. I never gave it any nitrogen fertilizer, only super phosphate. It never bloomed durig the summer. Two weeks ago, it set buds. The plant bloomed on Saturday for the first time. Better late than never!
Carol, love your sedum. The rain matters so much doesn't it? While so many areas were dry, here in central NC we've had an exceptionally well-watered spring and summer. One farmer said it was the year of a lifetime for farming. It has been great for the flowers but is very unusual. Normally my garden is all dried up and ignored by this time of year. We seem to be in a pocket of dryness still in Chicago's south 'burbs. This is the first fall I can ever remember having to water. Fortunately though, we did get a nice rain over the weekend. No amount of watering can make up for how rain works its magic in the garden.
I adore asters, and yours look wonderful. I have yet to be convinced to add grasses to my garden, so I can understand your reluctance. However, I do think they are very pretty in gardens, and am glad to hear you're satisfied with your decision to go forward with them. Thanks for hosting!

there is all kinds of goodies going on at my house, first time flowering orchids, massive numbers of flowers on some of my specimen size plants and of course all the blooms from the garden, thanks so much for holding another marvelllous GBBD, i'm looking forward to reading everyones posts tomorrow, but for now, i'm off to bed, good night everyone

Thank you for hosting this, Carol. Autumn on the south coast of Portugal is mild so my roses may bloom again. They have not enjoyed the hot, dry summer. My photos were taken on Saturday and Sunday. My lawn looked terrible before the autumn rain!
A striking combination of asters with the grasses Carol. It would seem that sadly bees have had problems on both sides of the Atlantic this summer. Over here it was too wet for them to be out and about visiting flowers 🙁 Thanks for hosting – my wish list always grows each GBBD.

It's aster time for me. They bloomed sporadically all through the summer, which made me wonder if I would get a fall bloom, but in the past week they've really taken over.

I can't disagree that fall has been kind to us.Your asters are beautiful as is the plucky little clematis.
I awarded the Longview Ranch Blue Ribbon to Agastache 'Acapulco Orange'for its superb performance this year. It's still blooming, along with Phygelius, crape myrtle and a few other hangers-on.

Amsonia hubrichtii is my favourite I think here in Ontario (Canada). But there is much left to enjoy, whether subtle or garish and bright! Thanks for hosting this and allowing me to realize the beauty which remains.
This fall has definitely been a welcome change from the hot and dry summer–your clematis is beautiful! Like you, I was reluctant to add grasses, but they do make a great backdrop for blooming plants. Thanks for hosting this once again, Carol!

I'm also in a Zone 6b garden, although I'm in Rochester (western) NY. My Flower Carpet roses are also doing well, and so are my raspberries! Clematis, not so much… Lucky you!

Your asters are going bonkers. I’m a bit embarrassed since they seem like an easy flower to grow, but they refuse to do so on the Lot. I’m going to keep a closer eye on them next Spring (if they come up).
Also, what are you growing for your cover crop in your raised vegetable beds? Do you also dump your cut grass and chopped leaves in there during Fall clean up?
My asters are about done with. So many participants with so many blooms late in the season!

I've also found that a lot of plants have rebloomed (or finally bloomed) now that we've had cooler weather. We are all relieved!

Hi Carol, Glad to see the Roses are still prospering. We are liking our Asters as well. I highly recommend Allium thunbergii as a nice addition to the fall garden.
Love the Sunny Knock Out rose! I had to leave mine behind in my garden when I moved earlier this year and haven't been able to find another. This one is on the top of my flowers to purchase list for next year. Until then, I'll enjoy yours. 🙂

I love your sedum. Mine just looks rusty brown at this point.
I do have some other pretty things blooming now: agastache, several salvias, dahlias, gaura and more. They're all in my October Bloom Day post over on my blog, and as a new garden blogger, I'm very appreciative of every visit and comment by other flower enthusiasts 🙂
Thanks for hosting this great garden eye candy fest! the pickings are getting slim for blooms here in New Hampshire but there were still some beauties here and there to enjoy after our first hard freeze last Friday.
It went down to 22F two days before GBBD, but there's still some bloom here. Really.
I love your idea of the GBBD. Unfortunately I am to late for this month, but in November I am going to participate.

I was still picking green beans until last week. We haven't had a frost yet so we still have tomatoes and Sugar Snap Peas have started to ripen. I, also, still have a few raspberries! Your photos of your garden are beautiful!

Your garden looks great after your drought, Carol! Your roses are so exuberant. We had a record dry summer this year, and are finally getting some rain again. I had the glad reappearance this fall of a clematis that had seemed to be gone for 3 years. I'm surprised to see your Clematis also blooming now. Amazing.
