Welcome to Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day for February 2025.
Here in my USDA hardiness zone 6a garden in central Indiana, the crocuses are starting to pop up throughout the back lawn. I think the first one showed up on February 2nd.
Then on the 3rd it was so warm that the crocuses were open and I saw a few bees.
But today, though sunny, it is quite chilly—by mid-afternoon,still just a degree below freezing—so the crocuses are staying closed up tight. They know in their own flowery way that there won’t be any bees buzzing about looking for their nectar when it is this cold.
Elsewhere in the garden, snowdrops are also blooming.

They took a bit of a beating after coming up in December, then getting snowed on in January, but they don’t look that bad today. Or at least this little clump of them looks decent.
In front, there is one lone snowdrop that has made an appearance.

It will soon be surrounded with crocuses and reticulated irises, followed by various other spring flowers.
But not today. In another week or so…
That’s when I expect the witch hazel to also bloom.

In another week or so.
That’s it for this month’s bloom day. Considering that when I posted the first bloom day back in February 2007, there was snow on the ground, I think this is a good showing today. But it isn’t quite as nice as February 2024, when we seemed to be much further along.
How’s your garden growing as we reach mid-February? Any flowers? Or are you snow-covered? Or do you live in a tropical environment when we imagine that flowers bloom without ceasing?
Join in for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day and share those flowers with us! It’s easy to participate. Post about your blooms on or around the 15th of the month on your blog, Substack newsletter, Instagram, TikTok, or wherever it is you share your garden, then come back here and leave a link in the Mr. Linky widget so we can find you and a comment so we know what you have to show us.
(Speaking of newsletters, check out my weekly newsletter, filled with garden-y goodness in bite-sized pieces, and see if it is something you might like to subscribe to! )
And always remember, the inspiration for this ancient (by internet standards) meme…
We can have flowers nearly every month of the year. – Elizabeth Lawrence.
Happy Bloom Day Carol! I can’t believe your crocus are already blooming and you are a whole zone colder than here. We have been covered with a layer of snow for several days with more on the way for today. The Hellebores don’t mind though…they are blooming and I am also enjoying the blooms inside!
Oh, did I appreciate your flowers! Why? No outdoor flowers today for us in the Southern Tier of New York. We are in a pattern of snow/freezing rain/rain/everything freezes/rinse and repeat (more snow turning to freezing rain tonight) so if my purple Lenten Rose has buds I’m not going to try to look. Your post gives me hope that spring is out there somewhere. I hope it finds us soon.
