The day after the day after bloom day…
Thank you to everyone who posted about their blooms, or lack of blooms as the case may be, for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. I wish I had more time to read every post – there are 127 listed so far – but that is a daunting task these days! But I do read all the comments and can tell you without a doubt…
This winter has been like no other, and is certainly not like last winter.
Nearly all of us have fewer blooms than last year at this time, are growing weary of this winter, and are counting the days until Spring.
Well, the “growing weary of winter” and “counting the days until Spring” is right on schedule this winter; it’s the fewer blooms this is different from last year.
While you are lamenting your lack of blooms and counting those days until Spring, how about visiting a few bloom day posts and discovering some new fellow “gardeners in bloom”? You can do this by going back to the bloom day post, finding your name on the Mr. Linky Widget, and then visiting the two blogs listed before you and the two listed after you. Or just pick out a few names you don’t recognize and visit those blogs. You never know who or what you will discover in doing this for a few minutes. Many of the blogs that I now follow regularly I found through bloom day posts.
If all goes according to plan, I should be sowing peas in my garden one month from today, on March 17th. In four weeks. Just 28 days to go. With my garden currently buried in nearly ten inches of snow, this seems almost laughable, implausible, ridiculous, over-optimistic, senseless, naive.
But I know that Spring is just around the corner and I’m making plans for it. Big Plans. New Plans. Mysterious Plans. Plans to be revealed as they are… planned. I’m conjuring up Dr. Hortfreud, Hortense Hoelove, and Thorn Goblinfly to weigh in on some very big plans for my garden. Plans…

Alas, I have been long absent from Bloom Day. Last summer it was time and health issues, and now…let's just say that being bloomless makes me crabby. You are so right: spring IS coming and making the plans is bug fun! It even helps fight the crabbies 🙂
You never know how it is going to be after a month. I'm sure the gods will favour you and your peas!
I haven't posted anywhere for a week because of an Internet blackout! Awful. Talk about blight. During the hour that it was mysteriously restored before being taken away again, I did slip a couple of posts onto my own blog, but no time for blooms or foliage. I did have time to make plans and more seed orders. I won't get peas in the ground in March, but wait til you see the newly planned Early Spring vegetable garden. Soon. That's my plan.
I envy the cyclic nature of gardening activity in your place… Winter to rest and plan, Spring and summer to reap what you sow…. ~bangchik

By hook or by crook, I'll have something other than the same pansies that have featured in my Garden Bloom Day entries by next month. Even if I have to go out and buy a bunch of flowers at the grocery store!
Pea sowing does sound wonderful…I hope all goes well! I suspect that the middle south will present a nice bloom day showing for next month….If not, well, the world as we know it will have been greatly changed. gail
Carol, a great idea to read the blogs before and after your own name. Sometimes I look at the list and just get overwhelmed not knowing where to start.
It seems to me I have heard of planting peas under the snow. Gives them extra nitrogen or something. Maybe if you still have snow you could google and find out. But I really wish the snow to be gone by then and the tulips and daffodils starting to sprout. 🙂
I am also in zone 5, and oh so looking forward to spring! I can't wait to sow peas, even though I have to shell them all just so that I can eat them, since the rest of the family hates them…more for me I guess! But I NEED to put something in the ground! My kitchen greenhouse just is not enough! I need spring DIRT! Got big plans for the garden this year and I am ready for some 60-70 sun to put them into play!

Your observation that this year seems to be worse than last made me go look at my GBBD post from last February. I guess I've been in denial, as I had 2 plants in bloom outside last year, while all is covered with dazzling snow this year. I had forgotten. Now I'm bummed.
