I keep a notebook nearby to write down random thoughts and ideas and keep notes of stuff I want to remember, or maybe write a blog post about someday.
This evening, after a rainy day (thank goodness!), I was flipping through my current notebook and came across a thought on secrets.
I gave no one credit for the thought and when I searched for it online, I didn’t find anything so I assume I wrote it.
If not, apologies!
What I wrote originally was about books.
“Books hold secrets until you open them. Even then, they might not reveal all their secrets until you’ve read them several times. And when you get to the end of a book, there’s probably still a secret or two the book kept from you, sensing you weren’t ready for it.”
Now, let’s make it about gardens, shall we?
(I always do.)
“Gardens hold secrets until you enter them. Even then, they might not reveal all their secrets until you’ve walked through them several times. And when you leave a garden, there’s probably still a secret or two that the garden kept from you, sensing you weren’t ready for it.”
Even my own garden, pictured above, is probably keeping secrets from me, even after 27 years. And I know hundreds of the books on my shelves are filled with secrets I’ve yet to discover.
All that makes entering a garden or opening a book something to look forward to, an adventure, a journey into a world full of secrets. You never know what new secrets it will decide to reveal!
(Did you know I purposely hid secrets in my first three gardening essay books? I did! Then at the end of those books, in the acknowledgments, I revealed that little tidbit about the hidden secrets (secret secrets?) and provided instructions on how to find them. Why didn’t I put secrets in the last two gardening essay books? Well, now, that’s another secret!)
Thanks for reading to the end. Now go find another secret in your garden or in that book you’re reading.
