Once upon a summer, there was a place called May Dreams Gardens where garden fairies lived with a gardener named Carol.
Every spring, Carol came out to the garden after the last frost and sowed rows and rows of green beans. Some years, she put plastic forks up and down the rows of green beans to keep the rabbits from eating the seedlings.
Then one year, Carol got lazy and just sowed the beans without the forks.
When two mischievous garden fairies, Seedy and Soddy, saw what Carol had done (or rather, hadn’t done), they thought it would be funny to teach her a lesson. So they stomped on some of the seeds so they never even came up. Then they threw a big party for all the rabbits and showed them the remaining green bean seedlings, unprotected by plastic forks.
The rabbits rejoiced, thanked Seedy and Soddy, and ate their fill of the seedlings.
Later when Carol saw how poorly her green beans were doing—they don’t grow well when garden fairies stomp on them and rabbits keep eating them—she was disappointed and thought how it was going to be a terrible green bean year.
But when Honoria and Hortensis, two righteous garden fairies, saw what had happened and figured out that Seedy and Soddy were responsible, they went straight to the oldest and wisest garden fairy, Ol’ Rainbow Tanglefly, to tell him all about it.
Ol’ Rainbow immediately called a meeting of all the garden fairies and made it known how Seedy and Soddy had not only wrecked this year’s green bean crop, but they also might have eliminated any chance of the Christmas Cottontail planting bulb and sowing seeds for spring flowers on Christmas Eve.
In short, Seedy and Soddy had put the garden in great danger. It was a near disaster!
Seedy and Soddy were confused because they didn’t see how the lack of green beans was related to Christmas, but then Ol’ Rainbow explained that they needed the green beans so they could make green bean cookies, a favorite food of both the Christmas Cottontail AND the Halloween Hare.
Finally realizing what they had done, Seedy and Soddy were greatly ashamed of themselves and quite sorry. But with the help of Honoria and Hortensis, they started Operation Get Carol to Plant More Green Beans.
They promised that if they were successful in getting Carol to sow more seeds for green beans, they wouldn’t stomp on the seeds, and they’d work night and day to keep the rabbits away.
Somehow, through secret methods known only to garden fairies, Operation Get Carol to Plant More Green Beans was a big success. They got Carol to sow more seeds for green beans.
And this time Seedy and Soddy kept their promises and didn’t stomp on any seeds, and they made sure the rabbits stayed out of the garden.
And so the green bean plants grew and grew and grew some more. They produced so many green beans that Carol could barely keep up with picking them.
But it was okay that Carol didn’t pick all the green beans. The garden fairies needed some too.
When Carol wasn’t looking, Honoria and Hortensis snuck in and picked a bunch of green beans to make the garden fairies’ famous green bean cookies for the Halloween Hare and the Christmas Cottontail.
And as the story goes, they all lived happily ever after, with enough green beans to eat green beans as often as they wanted to, with enough green beans to freeze some for the winter, with enough green beans to make treats for both the Christmas Cottontail and the Halloween Hare.
With enough green beans to ensure happiness forever at May Dreams Gardens.
At least until the next time Seedy and Soddy misbehave…
