I’m so excited today because I am finally able to talk about a top-secret tomato breeding project in my garden which has produced the world’s first-ever hardy tomato plant.
This tomato plant is able to withstand temperatures down to at least -20 degrees Fahrenheit! That’s right. It grows AND FLOWERS all through the winter, and sets fruit as well. Frost and snow do not kill it!
Here are some common questions and answers about it.
Does it really set fruit in the wintertime? Yes. Winter-set tomatoes can be smaller but they are delicious.
How big does the tomato plant get? As big as you want it to get. It’s an indeterminate variety. It grows and grows and grows. That’s an issue we are working on. We’d actually like it to be less vigorous, if you can believe that.
Does it have problems with diseases? No, not a bit. It’s like a miracle!
What about tomato hornworms? The hornworms love it but because the plant grows so rapidly, you barely notice them eating on it.
What do the tomatoes taste like? They taste like sunshine and warm summer days.
What is this tomato called and where can I get one? Our current working name for this new hardy tomato variety is ‘April Fooler’ or maybe ‘April Fooling No One’. Unfortunately, we aren’t yet ready to go to market with this hardy variety, but when we are, you’ll be the first to know!
Happy Spring!
Happy April 1st!
Happy April Fools Day!
