Spring has sprung

April 4, 2005 By Carol Michel 1 Comment

What a beautiful day! I got out and cleaned up two of the raised beds in the vegetable garden and planted spring vegetables in one and sweet peas in another. For the vegetables, I divided a 4′ x 8′ raised bed into 1 foot squares. I planted peas along the one long side, and then 1 square each of bibb lettuce, black-seeded simpson lettuce, spinach, mesclun, radishes , and beets. I’m going to plant a new square of each every week so I have a more continuous harvest and don’t have to try to everything at once. I planted all the onion sets that I purchased yesterday, in a total of 6 squares.

I am hopeful that the rabbits don’t find the vegetables just as they are sprouting. We’ll see what happens this year. If I remember to do so, I may sprinkle some blood meal around to keep them away. They can be so destructive!

There is much blooming in the garden… star magnolias, forsythia, crocuses, hyacinths, daffodils, maple trees, Lenten roses. So far no dandelions, but I’m sure one or two will bloom soon.

I do need to get some more mulch to put around the raised beds. There are several areas that are completely bare, with landscape cloth showing through. Not too attractive!
