The Paradox of Gardening

November 18, 2011 By Carol Michel 16 Comments

The paradox of gardening is that you can lose yourself in a garden while finding yourself in a garden.

If you are a gardener, this makes perfect sense.

If you are not a gardener, you may have to think about how someone can do two seemingly opposite things at the same time. You may have to ask a gardener what it means.

Raise your hand if you have lost yourself in a garden while finding yourself in a garden.

Welcome to the Paradox of Gardening.

I'm frequently lost in the garden, time has no meaning, spouse is neglected, dinner is late. During daylight hours, if nobody can find me in the house, they know to look outside and find me in the garden. Is that what you mean?

The garden is the very best place to get lost and find myself. The best.

What a beautiful sentiment….I agree wholeheartedly. My other favorite feeling about gardening is that it is the ultimate belief in the future….not sure on the exact wording!

I often come home from a long day at work and grab a glass of wine and yes lose my self in the garden.
    My gardens are my heaven!

I was very lost in life not long ago and found myself in the garden again…somewhere I had never thought to look before!

    I have two hands raised!

Wise words, Carol; this could be added to one of those quotes sites.

    *Hand raised*

Totally agree – it's something I've been pondering for a while now.

Raising my hand also. It is one of my favorite gifts of the garden…the ability to be lost and the joy of what I've found.

I am so often lost in the garden…and often intentionally, until one of my children finds me! Sometimes I give myself a "time out" from the sibling rants and disappear for a few, sanity-saving minutes.

It's a bit tricky running my business from home, because while I'm physically "here," I'm often lost for hours in the greenhouses, nursing my little seedlings and dreaming of spring.

So true! So easy to get lost, letting time slip by yet finding one self and restoring the energy. Great thought to have on Thanksgiving day! You are so right!
