Is it just me, or does that sunflower look like a monster’s eye peering at whatever is on the other side of the fence?
The other side of the fence.
Where the neighbors are.
All my sunflowers are facing over the fence, except in late afternoon when I get a sideways view of them.
But for the better part of the day, they all look to the north.
I, and the garden, are to the south of that particular stretch of fence where I planted all of them.
I’ve made a note about it so that next year I can plant the sunflowers where at least if when they face north, I can walk around to that side of them to see them.
In the meantime, I hope my neighbors are enjoying the sunflowers, which are just tall enough to peer over the fence at them.
(Truth be told, I’ve grown sunflowers along that fence before and I knew they would face away from me. But, sometimes it takes writing something down to remind you to do it different the next time. Duly written down…)
Anyway…
Pretty flowers, aren’t they? They are from the Van Gogh Fantasy Mix from Sunflower Steve.
Check out Sunflower Steve’s Instagram page, if you are on Instagram. He has other beautiful sunflowers he’s breeding and I’ll tell you what, I can’t think of anyone with a more positive attitude, even in the face of early summer drought followed by torrential downpours, and even some hail. In spite of it all, he’s still excited about his sunflowers.
And if his newer varieties are as pretty as the Van Gogh Fantasy mix, I’ll get in line to buy seeds for them too.

I have sunflowers reaching over my neighbor’s fence too, and it should give me a smile to know they enjoy the view. But they never set foot in their backyard, and likely have no idea. Isn’t that a sad state?
Carol says
Robin, that is sad that your neighbors aren’t enjoying those sunflowers!

I love Sunflowers. This year I am growing them in pots. I don’t have any huge ones.
Carol says
Helen, I also grew some I got from the seed library at the local library… they are only 18 inches tall with little flowers!
