Meet my new favorite marigold…
Ugh, I just realized that there is a weedy ol’ nutsedge right in the center of this photo I took of my new favorite marigold.
I’d never make it as a garden photographer.
Anyway, meet Tagetes tenuifolia, the signet marigold. This particular variety is ‘Gem Blend’ which means I should have ended up with both ‘Lemon Gem’ and ‘Orange Gem’, but only a few of the seedlings I direct sowed in the garden came up, and clearly, they are ‘Orange Gem’.
Or maybe a bunch of seedlings came up and only two survived my weeding?
What weeding, you ask?
Clearly not a lot of weeding, hence the nutsedge.
But I still love this little signet marigold.
I think next year I’ll sow seedlings in a flat and then prick them out and plant them in the garden.
Yes, that’s what I’m going to do!
And I’m going to do a better job of weeding!
(One of those two things has a higher probability than the other. I’ll let you guess which one.)
And yes, I did go out there and pull out that nutsedge.
And here’s another picture.
My new favorite marigold.

I have read books from you which are in the Franklin, IN library. I enjoyed them very much. A few days ago I was reading a post from you maybe on Facebook, You Tube, etc. and saw a birdhouse on the ground. It was in your garden. It was a white, grayish color with several small windows on the side. I would love to have some information about this. I would like to purchase one. I have searched and can not find the picture. Any help in locating this would be appreciated.

Francis, I think you are referring to the concrete fairy house that sits in my garden? I received it as a gift from my co-workers when I retired back in 2016. I think someone ordered from Etsy, but don’t know for sure. I love having it in my garden. Sorry I don’t have any more information than that.

I learned the value of Marigolds this summer–have never grown them before. Oblivious to heat, feeds butterflies, flowers steadily for months…
Not familiar with T. tenuifolia, but it looks like something to try next year.
I would never have noticed the nutsedge if you had not pointed it out! Was too busy admiring the Marigold.

Yes, definitely give signet marigolds a try next year!
