My hubris, my over-confidence, is on full display in the garden, taking the form—this time—of a large trumpet lily knocked over by the wind and rain.
Deep down, of course I knew the lilies were at risk of falling over if the rain and wind hit them just right.
But did I stake them?
No, I did not. That is why seeing one now horizontal in the garden instead of vertical is a monument to my hubris.
The good news is that this is the only one that fell over hard enough to damage the stem so there is really no point in trying to stake it now.
Plus, I need the reminder that these lilies often need a little stake to help support them.
So did I run around and find stakes to put next to all the other lilies?
I did not.
My only excuse is “hubris.” Over-confidence.
I still have it.
See, this lily is still standing tall, no stakes!
And if I rotate the first picture…
It sort of looks like it’s standing next to a wall of plants.
Hubris.
(I could end this blog post here but I have one more thought. There are some who believe that leaving tall lilies and hollyhocks and other such flowers unstaked attracts wind and thunderstorms. If you are one of those people, I will not apologize. We needed some rain! More on that in another post!)
