Do you know why we don’t pay too much attention to the groundhog? Well, according to the legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow, we’ll have six more weeks of winter, which means spring will arrive around mid March. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we’ll have an early spring.
Around here, an early spring would arrive around mid March.
So either way, spring will arrive around mid March and that’s when I’ll plant peas, lettuce, spinach and onion sets. The groundhog doesn’t matter!
We might as well spend the day watching the movie Groundhog Day, over and over. Or spend it ordering more seeds. Or use it as an excuse to buy ourselves another gift, according to a comment left by Entangled on a previous post.

Very funny!

Uh….I’ll confess. I didn’t get it at first, never having seen the movie, but after I called you to let you know of your “glitch” and you explained it to me, I now understand…
Sheer Genius!

I ‘got it’ right away, maybe because I’ve seen the movie. I wonder how many people are scratching their heads over Carol’s post?

SO FUNNY! Around my neck of the woods it’s usually around groundhog’s day that I begin feeling like everyday is just like the last: Wake Up, Watch the local weather, Shovel Snow, go to work/school, Come Home, Shovel Snow, Go to Bed. Repeat. Any one else feeling a bit like Bill Murray?
Linda aka Crafty Gardener says
Groundhog day was really started by the German immigrants in the 1800’s and it was to celebrate Candlemas Day, which is the half way point from the beginning of winter to the beginning of spring.
Shadow or no shadow spring will arrive on or about March 21. But the first day of spring isn’t always the first spring day.
Lisa at Greenbow says
Yep, I am feeling like Bill right now. UGH… We had a groundhog in our garden last year. It must have been migrating becasue it didn’t stay. I would hate for those big brutes to decide to hang out here. Talk about destruction. Have you seen the holes they dig for their burrows??
Carol it must be something with Blogger happening to duplicate your post. I noticed that it happened to Kate too.
Carol Michel says
Steven… I figured a guy from Pennsylvania, the epi-center of Groundhog Day celebrations, would get it!
Sherry… Did you notice the sun came out in central Indiana after I took my picture? So, the groundhog does see his shadow. Now, go rent the movie!
Eleanor… At least your youngest child was scratching her head over it!
Robbinscabin… The days of winter do seem to drag on and repeat themselves, that’s for sure.
Crafty Gardener… Indeed the first day of spring can be a very wintery day. I hope that isn’t the case this year.
Lisa at Greenbow… You must be feeling like Bill Murray in ‘Caddyshack’ fighting that gopher. I’m feeling more like Bill Murray in the movie ‘Groundhog Day’ where he is stuck repeating the same day over and over… much like reading a blog post over and over. No Blogger problems, just some Groundhog Day humor today!

Tee hee! Very creative thinking!
I don’t know if my local groundhog, Wiarton Willie, saw his shadow or not, He lives near Georgian Bay on Lake Huron where the sun may have peeked through the clouds, and I live further south where it’s definitely overcast.

I never saw the movie either, but I did understand–and laughed, even on a Saturday morning when it’s raining and everything is a glare of ice (from the freezing rain of last night). Skates are becoming mandatory footwear for going out of the house. Bring on spring–in two or three months, it’ll be here….
vonlafin says
Sorry, I hated that movie! But not your post, very clever!
Annie in Austin says
Carol – when you get to Austin you’re getting an extra hug just for this post – love it, love it, love it!!
We bought the DVD so we can watch the movie of “Groundhog Day” tonight – but just once!

I never saw the movie either, but after reading all the comments, I “get” that if I had seen the movie, I would have “gotten” it. And I agree, only six more weeks of winter would be a real treat. We had a snowstorm on April 15th last year.
Aunt Debbi/kurts mom says
It took me a second. Ha ha. We have a beautiful day here in Texas. I am going outside.

Good one, Carol. I’m so tired it took me a second.~~Dee

Ha! I agree…you always think up the clever thing! I got it right away too, thanks to Netflix. That’s one of the movies I missed the first time around and saw it only a year or two ago.

Hahahahaha! Very funny. Very Funny. And, you are so right about Spring, groundhog or not, it’s all pretty much the same around here as well. Spring comes in late February, with one possible set back by the first week in March. Regardless.
Carol Michel says
Dirty Knees… Thanks, I hope you have an early spring regardless.
Jodi… Two or three months until spring? It seems like so long to wait, still.
Vonlafin… That’s okay at least you understood the post.
Annie in Austin… Thank you, thank you, thank you and I hope you enjoy the movie.
Kathy… I don’t think we’ve ever had a snow storm that late around here. I shudder to think… though last April was very cold.
Aunt Debbi/Kurts Mom… Rub it in! Actually, it was nice here, too, but still a little chilly.
Dee/reddirtrambling… Thanks, if you weren’t expecting it, it might take a minute to get it.
Leslie… Thanks, I think it definitely helped to see the movie to understand the post.
Diana… We still have winter in late February. Blah.
Thanks all for the comments and for letting me have some fun today.

I’m chuckling Carol. Funny girl 🙂 I’ve been wishing I had that movie to watch tonight. I saw it with our oldest daughter while visiting her at college in Ohio. It brings back very fond memories of a precious time.
Ah yes, spring will come when it’s ready, whether the groundhog says so or not!

Oh Carol, we are going to have so much fun! I have a groundhog story or two. They eat delphiniums you know! Glad they don’t bother your garden!
Giddy says
Great post! It started my day off with a smile and also reminded me that we won’t even see little green leaves on the trees til mid May. Sigh. Oh well, we’ll be lounging in splendor while the rest of the nation roasts in heat and humidity. The prices we pay for a nice cool summer.
Aiyana says
Groundhog Day was never a big thing here in Arizona because the little animal would never have went underground to begin with. Great post,

Oh Carol, I thought today was groundhog day. I seemed like dejavu when I read the same thing twice, and like I have waken up to Saturday all over again.:)

LOL! Of course I got it right away – “Groundhog Day” is much beloved around here. Woodstock, IL, where the movie was filmed, is just 40 minutes up the road from me. We watched the movie yesterday morning & the kids were wowed that they had been in a place that was in a movie (we took them to Woodstock’s square last summer). I don’t think Woodstock Willie saw his shadow.
Hope you never have a groundhog. They are very destructive & are hard to trap. I’ve had to deal with 3 (not at the same time).
Carol Michel says
Kerri, Yes, spring will come and we can stop having these ‘repeating’ winter days.
Layanee, If the groundhogs eat delphiniums, they are no friend of mine! We will have fun at the spring fling.
Giddy, That is a price to pay for a cool summer! Mid-may? That’s our frost-free date around here.
No Rain, Thanks for the compliment. I would have guessed that Groundhog Day had no meaning in Arizona, or other southern states, for that matter.
Curtis, Don’t I wish we could have two Saturdays in a weekend, maybe three. That would be nice!
Robin(Bumblebee), Yes, I’ve heard that my humor can be subtle. Glad you liked it!
Mr. McGregor’s Daughter, I never want to have to deal with a groundhog. I’ve never heard of anyone even seeing one around here.
Thanks all for the nice comments and for having some Groundhog Day fun with me!

Carol, did you buy yourself a present? (I’m just getting caught up with blog reading.)
And I sure am glad some previous commenters let me in on the joke, because I just assumed it was another Blogger hiccup 😉
