Garden fairies here.
We are garden fairies and we are posting on this blog once again because we want to talk about the crocus lawn, which, if we may brag, is looking as good as it has ever looked.
And for the record, let us say that we are taking the credit because Carol hasn’t planted a single crocus corm in the lawn for the past two years.
Oh, sure, there for a while she was dropping in 1,000 a year, though some years it was only 500.
But when you see how closely grouped some of the crocuses are you can tell that we garden fairies have been hard at work multiplying all those crocuses because Carol did not plant them that close together.
Well, at least multiplying the ones that the voles didn’t eat.
But let me tell you, those voles and mice and other critters couldn’t keep up with Carol, and now there are a couple of feral cats running around, which we think is also helping. No, Carol doesn’t feed those cats or otherwise encourage them; she has a neighbor who does that. For which she is grateful if the cats are indeed keeping the voles and mice away.
Anyway, we are garden fairies and let us tell you right now that between the crocuses in the back lawn and the crocuses in the front flower beds, we are busy.
Why are busy? Because it is our job to open and close the flowers based on air temperature and how sunny it is. And let us tell you, we have had some nice, warm sunny days lately, but did we rest and relax and soak up that late winter sunny warmth?
We did not! We opened up all the crocuses! And then we closed them as the sun went down. It took all of us to do it… Seedy and Soddy, Hortense and Honoria, even Ol’ Rainbow Tanglefly did his part.
We can barely keep up.
Oh, and did we mention that these crocuses have been snowed on and still look great? Who do you think should be thanked for that little miracle. Let us give you a hint…
Garden Fairies!
Now Carol is talking about planting more crocuses in a few of the spots that seem not to have any, plus more in front, and we are garden fairies. Will we stop her? No, we will not, but we may need to bring in extra help next year.
But honestly, based on the reel Carol put on Instagram showing them, it is worth it. The show won’t last forever and once it is over, we can rest.
Oh, wait, we can’t rest! This is just the beginning. The little irises are coming up now too. Seedy and Soddy said they look great.
And by the way, Carol didn’t plant those crocuses around the irises, we garden fairies did. Or rather, we did with the help of the bees who are all over the crocuses pollinating them so they produce seeds which eventually grow up to be flowers. We are garden fairies, it’s the circle of life and why we are grateful that Carol is too lazy to disturb the soil much (or as you can see remove the leaves) so our work is not often disrupted.
Anyway, we are garden fairies and we need to go now because it is going to be nice and sunny and warm today so yes, that means we are opening up all the crocuses for the day soon. We’ll try to forget that some of the crocuses are already fading by remembering that this is jut the beginning, and honestly, we are garden fairies, this is our life!
