The crocus days are here!
I’ve gone from finding one crocus up and blooming and taking a zillion pictures of it, to having so many crocuses blooming that I can no longer take individual pictures of them.
People are always surprised how early these crocuses come up in the lawn.
Generally, I’ll see a few before Valentine’s Day and then from that point on, I’ll see more every day.
They don’t ever seem to be affected by snow and cold. On cloudy days they just close up and wait. On sunny days, they open up and wait for pollinators.
And there will be pollinators. They come out in the sunshine presumably to stretch their legs and get used to flying again. They soon find the crocuses. I like to think it is a treat they weren’t expecting but welcome none the less.
In a few weeks, the crocuses will start to fade and we’ll move on to the next lawn flowers, Chionodoxa, also called Glory of the Snow. And yes, there will be dandelions. When you plant crocuses and other small bulbs in your lawn, you can’t use herbicides. You must accept, even welcome, the dandelions, clover, and sweet violets.
And why wouldn’t you?

Exciting!! I have crocus greens up but no blooms yet.
Lovely – here in Minnesota I still have 3 feet of snow in my front yard. It will be a few weeks before we even see land let alone looking for spring flowers. Thanks for sharing these early blooms.
Do you know if dogs bother with crocus in the lawn? I love naturalizing bulbs but I am having trouble finding some that are safe for our dogs.
I don't have a dog so I don't know if they would bother crocuses in a lawn. I wouldn't think so. Occasionally, chipmunks, voles, squirrels, something will dig a few up but if you plant enough of them… you still get a lot of blooms.
I haven't had any luck getting crocus to establish in the lawn, but dandelions, violets and creeping Charlie are rampant in season. Right now it's just snow however.

I seem to have somebody who eats my crocus- after they have emerged. Must be the bunny as I find a lot of evidence that he was in that spot for a while. Would love to plant them throughout the turf area, would be so pretty.
Love seeing your crocus. I have some out there somewhere but they aren't as adventurous as yours… still hiding! SPRING is just around the corner. It's all good from here on out with daily reminders of the BIG COMEBACK! Bring it on.
No Crocus around here yet, but the Snowdrops are up and you can see the white buds.
No crocuses here for a while, although it got up to 51 degrees today. I hope winter is done with us but we've had too many "March surprises" here in upstate New York.
