On this St. Valentine’s Day, when all our thoughts turn to love, I’m excited to pass along my love of gardening and seed sowing by teaming up with Nature’s Crossroads, Earth-Friendly Seeds for Midwest Gardeners, to give away six packets of seeds to one reader, chosen by random drawing.
After all, there is no better way to share one’s love of gardening than to give someone a little plant or a packet of seeds so they can start their own garden.
You may be moved by this holiday of love to select seeds for…
Love-lies-bleeding, whose red strings of flowers will attract butterflies,
Hearts of Gold melons, an old classic of the garden,
Indiana Red tomato, an ox-heart shaped tomato,
Dwarf Jewel nasturtiums, a real gem of an edible flower,
Or any number of other vegetable and flower seeds.
It’s easy to enter to win six packets of seeds from Nature’s Crossroads, your choice! Just leave a comment about what you’d love to grow from seed.
That’s it! Deadline to enter is Thursday, February 17, 2011, 9:00 pm, and please make sure your comment includes your email address or leads me to it. Open to U.S. Residents over the age of 18.
Thank you to Nature’s Crossroads for providing the seeds for this giveaway.
Feb. 18 — And the winner is random comment number 27 — “T from Coldwater”! Congrats, T, and watch for an email on how to get your free seeds and thank you to everyone who entered.

That is a great tomato picture. I love to grow short-season, cold-tolerant (meaning they can take rather cool nights) varieties, any vegetable. A lot of vegetables, like tomatoes, don't like it when it gets below 50F at night in the summer.
dezignlady says
I Heart your picture:)
I don't get to grow a lot of veggies from seed since I don't have the best sun conditions for them but I do grow the vine, Spanish Flag which I just love and the hummingbirds love even more.
Diana says
What an amazing tomato! Every summer, I can't wait to come to Indiana and eat my MIL's fabulous tomatoes. But the seed I really want to grow is the name your own rose seed given to me by my best friend of Christmas. I'm so afraid of failing with it. But there isn't a veggie I wouldn't grow from see – I just love to see those first little leaves emerge!

I would love to grow a variety of chili peppers from seed. I'm intimidated by growing peppers because I don't have good grow lights for seedlings, but as a chili pepper snob I would really like to grow new and rare peppers with which to burn my mouth.

That's a wonderful list of plants! My husband loves nasturtiums! I just ordered my seeds a few minutes ago and had a last minutes addition… Seminole Pumkins! I'm doing a Three Sisters Garden, too, and saw them one Southern Exposure Seed Exchange's website. After reading a bit about them, how could one not want to try to grow these from seed?!?

Hi Carol,
I keep most of my veggie growing to the community garden where I volunteer. We donated 4500 lbs of organic veggies to our Coldwater area food pantry last summer. But I can't resist snap peas at home. Thanks for the opportunity for free seeds. Happy Valentines Day.
T from Coldwater.

I was 7 when my Dad went off to fight in WWII and my Mom, Grandma and aunt planted our first Victory Garden. It served us well during the shortages that were to come. After the war my Dad continued the garden and expanded to a community garden plot which we sued for many years harvesting fruits and vegetables whose flavor you could never get in a store. Now I live in an apartment and still garden in tubs on my back patio. Last year I grew my first abundant crops of upside down tomatoes in planters hung from the porch roof. The ripe ones were lucious and the fried green tomatoes were also. Besides that I grow spring onions and cukes some of which I pickle and bell peppers which I love. Everyone thinks I am wasting time with my make it work gardening until they taste the veggies then they change their minds. I would like to try some asparagus to see it it would grow in a large tub and my neighbor just finished making me two large mushroom tables in my damp basement and I am waiting arrival of the sterile growth medium and the spores. I would like to try any kind of seeds even house plants. I give house plants that I have raised for gifts at Christmas and for birthdays. There is nothing like a mature healthy plant in a nice pot as a gift or at least my family and friends seem to like them.

Very cool Carol! I just discovered Nature's Crossroads recently, after learning they are sponsoring One Seed Chicago this year. I've already ordered and received several packets of their wonderful, organic heirloom veggie seeds – can't wait to try them. I'm so glad to have a discovered an (almost) local supplier of organic, heirloom seeds!
I've already started some strawberries and peppers from seed in the basement, and will be starting alot more stuff in another month or so, plus direct-sowing more in the garden starting in April.
For gardeners that enjoy starting plants from seeds, the old saying that one can never be too rich or too thin can easily be changed to One can never have too many seeds!
Lily says
I'm kind of new to seed-starting. My first attempt was Melrose peppers, using seeds I saved from a plant I received from the Chicago Botanical Garden. It was such fun and I loved harvesting all my "babies." Now I want to "graduate" to using a heat mat to help my seedlings along. Thanks for the great info on this blog!

We grow all our veggies from seed, but only a couple annuals, as there isn't enough room under the grow lamp for much more than the veg. Someday I will get one those fancy multi-tiered plant stands and will get to start all kinds of beautiful annuals…

What a great giveaway! In my own garden, I love growing veggies from seed, but I am torn between picking tomatoes (my favorite) and something that will attract butterflies. Hmmm…
And thanks for introducing me to a new seed company. I've come across several articles lately about safe seeds and earth-friendly seeds, and this is another link that I'll be researching.

Having an abundance of purple coneflowers, I'd love to grow a few of the rarer varieties from seed. I've seen yellow and white, but maybe there are more out there.
My main success each year is growing tomatoes from seed. I have no luck with sunflowers, for some reason, but my eldest daughter has great sunflower karma, so I get her to plant mine for me.
