We are garden fairies and we are preparing for fall, y’all! Yes, we had to include that “y’all” because…
Wait a minute! We are garden fairies. We do not have to explain anything, but we will tell you that Carol has nearly abandoned this blog! If it wasn’t for us garden fairies, this would be one deserted, dusty, place.
Though, come to think of it, we haven’t had much rain here lately, so the garden is looking a bit dry. But we are doing our very bestest as garden fairies to keep it going regardless, while preparing for Fabulous Fall Flowering Festivities.
For starters, Seedy and Soddy have done an excellent job of self-sowing tall asters throughout the garden. Out by the Vegetable Garden Cathedral, Granny ‘Gus’ McGarden reports that the first of those asters are just starting to show color. We guess that in another week or so, they’ll all be showing color and then by two weeks from now, the garden will be a wonder of purple asters.
A wonder!
As for the goldenrod and fleabane, well, Carol has been yanking those out wherever she sees them because no one planted them. They just showed up! We are garden fairies, we don’t know if we approve of their removal or not. But for the most part, we think it will be okay, but time will tell.
Ol’ Rainbow Tanglefly said they were just common field weeds back in the day, and he thinks it is fine not to let them take over.
In other news, we’ve noticed a lot of the Black-Eyed Susans died out in an area that was pretty shady so we think Carol will replant that area with hostas, mostly by digging and dividing some from elsewhere in the garden next spring. We are garden fairies and we approve of this plan.
We also approve of Carol planting more autumn flowering crocuses in the front garden. There are already a lot of spring flowering crocuses in front—thank you Hortense and Honoria for your years of hard working getting them to spread—so adding some autumn flowering crocuses will be a nice addition to the garden. Those crocuses will be like bookends—spring and fall—holding up summer.
Plus, it will confuse neighbors and passersby who have never heard of autumn flowering crocuses!
Won’t that be fun!
In still more news, Carol is awaiting the arrival of pansies at the local greenhouse where she shops. We hope it isn’t too warm for them, but we are garden fairies. We’ll do our bestest to keep them going through fall and into winter. They are our favorite!
With that, we will end this blog post. Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean we aren’t still busy. The trees around here are getting mighty big so we have tons of leaves to color up for fall. Not just yet, but soon. And by the way. We are not responsible for all the acorns falling onto the ground right now.
