Barnardia japonica

Barnardia japonica is one of my favorite late summer flowers.

The foliage comes up in the spring and then around mid-August, there are these lovely flowers.

Dee Nash and I talked about this flower on our latest episode of The Gardenangelists podcast. I got my plants as passalong plants from the curator at the Elizabeth Lawrence gardens in Charlotte, North Carolina about five years ago, give or take.

I went looking for a source to buy plants of this little late summer charmer so I could add it to the podcast notes and quickly discovered that not too many people are selling them.

My multiple searches came up empty until I went directly to the Arrowhead Alpines website and found that indeed, they have them for sale. Right here! They had previously been selling it as Scilla autumnalis so it is possible if I did more searching, I’d find someone selling it by that other name.

Also, Nan Ondra has some seeds for sale with a note that they require patience to get them to germinate.

Anyway, I found a source. I have no time for more searching. Comment below if you know of another source. This little flower deserves to be in more gardens!
